Job Description

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To outline the responsibilities and authorities of the Technician and person weighing prills at SGS Northam Eland.

RESPONISIBILITIES

  • Responsibility to log received samples into the SLIMS using work orders from the client.
  • Responsibility to print sample labels.
  • Responsibilities to ensure samples are sorted correctly before labeling and boxing the samples.
  • Responsibility to follow all quality directives of this Department.
  • Responsibility to weigh prills using a micro-balance and recording the weights in the SLIMS.
  • Responsible to lock the prills away in the safe at the end of the shift.
  • Responsible to perform nickel sulphide leaches and / or other similar Wet Chemical techniques by accurately following the written procedures.
  • Responsible for operation of laboratory instrumentation such as LECO analysers
  • Responsibility to bring all problems (technical and managerial) to the attention of the Chemist.
  • Responsibility to adhere to all quality, health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Responsibility to ensure that the housekeeping in the receiving area as well as the micro-balance room is in order.
  • Complies and conforms to Laboratory Quality Management System (ISO17025).
  • Responsibility to record any day-to-day repairs, maintenance, calibration and verification of instruments.
  • Responsibility to work in other areas and/or Divisions if asked to do so.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.

SPECIFIC AUTHORITIES

  • Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or entry to hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection, and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
  • Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
  • Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.

Qualifications

​​Education

  • National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry
  • Grade 12, with Mathematics and Science

Experience

  • 3 years laboratory experience
  • Competent in logging of samples and working with CClas.
  • A responsible person to work with prills.
  • Able to perform various wet chemical techniques
  • Lims administration and operation
  • Experience in instrumentation, data collection and reporting

Competencies

  • Must have full understanding of the LIMS system
  • Computer Literate (Microsoft Office).
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Quality Management System
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Works well under pressure
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
