Job Description

As a Legal Counsel you will provide timely and effective legal advice to SGS Australia Group management, divisions and functions, protecting the legal and commercial interests of the SGS Australia Group.

This is a hybrid opportunity that will allow you to work from home and from the office based in Notting Hill, Melbourne

Some specific responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the Corporate Counsel in providing independent and confidential legal advice;
  • Providing general commercial law advice including advice on business transactions, drafting, advising on and negotiating commercial contracts and tender submissions, business/asset acquisitions and disposals;
  • Providing advice on regulatory issues and key legislation impacting SGS Australia Group including staff training and education;
  • Providing assistance and advice in respect of key regulatory and compliance projects;
  • Providing advice on privacy law issues including managing and reviewing the Privacy Compliance Programme and acting as the SGS Australia Group Data Protection Officer;
  • Providing advice, drafting and negotiating property related documents including leases, agreements for lease and other documents;
  • Reviewing/updating precedent documents as required;
  • Providing general corporate advisory assistance;
  • Managing claims and litigation;
  • Developing internal governance, risk or compliance related policies as required;
  • Liaising with SGS Australia Group’s external legal advisors and other stakeholders as required including Geneva HQ based legal and other staff as well as other SGS staff internationally;
  • Undertaking work as allocated by the Corporate Counsel including on specific projects.

Qualifications

  • Qualified and admitted as a solicitor in Australia for unrestricted practice;
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with a reputable medium or large law firm(s);
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as in-house counsel ideally in a multinational setting;
  • General commercial, corporate and privacy law experience. If you do not have experience in Privacy Law but are interested in developing it, we encourage you to apply.
  • Property and litigation experience will be an asset.
