Job Description

While this is a full time position, because the work is seasonal, the staff is reduced from December to February allowing employees three months off to relax.  We have an immediate opening.

The site is located 1 hour North of Fort McMurray, AB. Bussing is provided from Fort McMurray and Fort McKay.  The schedule is 7x7 with 12 hour shifts.  Only candidates living in or around Fort McMurray and Fort McKay area will be invited for interview. No fly in/out offered.

Please note that successful candidate will have to complete Drug & Alcohol Testing, Fit for Duty testing, provide a clear 5 year Driver's Abstract, complete a Criminal Background Check and provide 2 professional References

Day to Day Duties Include:

The individual is responsible for performing and/or expanding experience in routine operational and maintenance duties to support tailings pond and bird deterrent operations with limited supervision. Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Bird deterrent activities in the field, including testing cannons, completing deterrent inspection reports, and recording GPS deterrent locations
  • Servicing and upkeep of bird deterrent equipment including cannons, floats, Lrads, effigies, kites
  •  Assisting bird monitors in bird and wildlife hazing activities
  • Nest sweeping
  • Reporting bird sightings on or around tailings ponds to bird monitors/Foreman
  • Operation of boats, trucks and argos and trailers.

The individual may be required to assess designated areas for indications of wildlife presence by monitoring, reporting and documenting findings while also keeping watch for wildlife that may be in proximity of the team.  These duties may include:

  • Monitoring for Bears and other wildlife while assisting with nest sweeping.
  • Preparedness to deploy any required wildlife deterrence mechanism such as bear spray, air horns, whistles, etc.
  • Documenting and reporting any wildlife presence such as sightings and identification of species, nests, dens, and subsequent flagging of areas of concern
  • Assisting bird monitors with the collection of bird data using bird identification skills, a GPS, range finder, binoculars, spotting scope and compass

The individual may be asked to assist in technical tasks including pond sounding, insitu testing, instrumentation installations, mudline and pond elevation surveys, and other duties.

The individual may be working from a boat or barge.

Maintain good reporting skills and communication skills. This could include completing one Daily Operators’ Report, fully and completely, for each project worked on in the course of a day, detailing the daily project activities, any conversations between SGS and the client or contractor, and details of any problems encountered and submit to immediate supervisor for review. All paperwork must be clear, concise, complete and accurate.

The individual provides support to other staff members, both junior and senior.

The individual ensures daily completion and submission of all reports and other necessary documentation, including timesheets, vehicle logs, inspections and daily operator reports and other documentation.

Complete job hazard analysis and any required safety documentation

Participate in site safety inspections

The individual keeps the Foreman / Supervisor informed of any operational, safety or housekeeping issues, actions taken or required, and situations in the area.

Individual must maintain SGS email account, checking frequently for corporate and site information, updates, and requests.

Individual must monitor and complete required SGS Campus training in a timely manner.

 

Qualifications

Profile:

  • High School Diploma
  • Environmental or Science education or experience would be an asset.
  • Progression from Environmental Technician 2 to Environmental Technician 3is attained after having achieved a minimum of one season of direct experience, proven competence and satisfactory hands-on experience, and a proven ability to carry out tasks with a minimum of direction.
  • Must pass a Fit for Duty test and Drug and Alcohol screening
  • Must be able to provide an acceptable drivers abstract and pass a criminal background check

Required Skills

  • Must be capable of standing and walking for long periods of time in various weather conditions and through challenging terrain.
  • Must be comfortable being in proximity to nature/wildlife.
  • Must be willing to complete a Bear Awareness / Bird Deterrent training course
  • Must be self-motivated and able to multi-task.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work well with others & independently.
  • Extended hours and shift work
  • Must hold or be willing to obtain a valid CSTS certificate or equivalent
  • Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Must work well under pressure
  • Must be fluent in English
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
  • Must be comfortable with email and online learning for internal courses.
  • Proven time management skills
  • Ability to work long hours in adverse weather conditions
  • Must be capable of meeting the physical requirements of the job – lifting, sitting, standing, walking, crouching, bending, climbing
  • Travel to other SGS locations or client location may be required from time to time.
