Job Description

  • Conduct laboratory tests.  It is expected that, over a period of time, Materials Technologists obtain competency in all tests conducted in the laboratory.
  • Conduct non-standard laboratory tests in support of and typically under the direction of SGS engineering personnel (e.g. strain gauging, hydrotesting, etc.).
  • Know and be comfortable with standards codes such as ASTM, ASME, CSA, NACE, API, AWS.
  • Awareness of all testing results and how they apply to the given code.  Technologists are expected to flag failed test results to their supervisor.
  • Learn to personally organize their own daily testing tasks based on the work flow and due dates given to them.
  • Maintain Laboratory and personal work area in a clean and professional manner.
  • Work within the rules of the ISO 17025 quality program.
  • Maintain Test equipment and conduct scheduled maintenance on test equipment.
  • Work with customers and co-workers to improve work processes and resolve technical issues.

Qualifications

Education:

·       A post-secondary education (degree and/or diploma) in Materials Engineering Technology or related program is required. 

Experience:

Upon hiring, the Materials Technologist shall meet one of the following criteria for certification:

Be registered with or eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APPEGA)

Be registered with or be eligible for registration with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET)

Entry level applicants are welcome.

Other Requirements:

  • Extended hours and shift work may be required from time to time.
  • Travel to other SGS locations or client location may be required from time to time.
  • Ensures full compliance with the company’s Health & Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies.
  • Good hand/eye coordination when handling samples & various equipment.
  • Must use good judgment to identify and resolve problems on the job.  When in difficulty refer problems to his/her supervisor for resolution.
  • Intermediate level of creativity required in solving routine problems.
  • Able to work well under pressure during high (peak) workloads and balancing conflicting demands of high volume versus the quality of results.

 

The following technical skills are considered an asset:

  • mechanical aptitude supported by background and experience
  • instrumentation and control
  • CAD
