Job Description

This position will be responsible for well-organized and efficient preparation and handling of inbound and outbound material.  These responsibilities are carried out in a team environment under the supervision of the Shipping and Receiving Supervisor.  Incumbents must be capable of multi-tasking to meet the department needs of working on several assignments simultaneously.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Determine best method of shipping using knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates.
  • Prepare bills of lading, customs forms, packing lists and other shipping documents in adherence to shipping and receiving procedures and regulatory compliance policies.
  • Maintain compliance with laws (e.g. soils permits), regulations (e.g. Transportation of Dangerous Goods), and standards (e.g. ICCP-Certified wood packaging) and complete appropriate documentation as required
  • Contact carrier for quotes and to issue instructions for shipping and delivery of material
  • Pack, seal, and label materials to be shipped
  • Inspect and verify inbound/outbound material against manifests, purchase orders, invoices or other documents, to verify accuracy of shipment.
  • Receive all inbound material in internal record-keeping systems (e.g. Oracle, SIMS)
  • Phone and/or correspond with carrier and suppliers to rectify problems, such as damages, shortages, and nonconformance to specifications
  • Distribute received material to identified departments/personnel or warehouse location
  • Perform cycle counts on laboratory supplies; order and maintain accurate stock
  • Maintain accurate records of all inbound and outbound materials for reporting and accounting purposes.
  • Maintain shipping and receiving area
  • Know safe storage and handling procedures for various chemicals and materials
  • Perform general physical activities in order to load, unload, sort and move shipments by hand or using material handling equipment (e.g. fork lifts, pallet jacks)

Qualifications

  • Attending full time post-secondary education before and after summer position.
  • Driver’s license and Forklift certificate or previous experience would be an asset.
  • Experience with information systems is considered an asset.
  • Candidates must be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel, & Outlook).
  • Skill sets: active listening, reading comprehension, speaking, writing, mathematics, instructing, social perceptiveness and critical thinking.
  • Ability to work well with others & independently.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Works well under pressure
  • Physically fit and able to lift 23kg (50lbs) and no fear of heights.
  • Extended hours and shift work may be required from time to time.
