Job Description

This position is expected to direct, plan, organize and motivate laboratory staff in the performance of their responsibilities and functions. 

  • Schedule the workflow throughout the department by meeting turnaround and quality standards. Solve all day-to-day process and technical problems.
  • Train departmental staff on new methods, practices and techniques.
  • Participate in business development activities to expand Agri business
  • Support the team by completing our day-to-day tasks when required
  • Supervise staff to carry out laboratory analysis according to established methods and meeting Quality Control (QC) standards.
  • Schedule work flow through the department so that client deadlines are met in a timely fashion; monitor throughput and performance.
  • Monitor and maintain lab QC standards.  Responsible for the quality of all data released by the department.
  • Solve day to day production and process problems within the department. 
  • Work in partnership with other supervisors/managers to solve client problems to ensure quality and customer satisfaction standards are met.
  • Keep up-to-date with the advancements in new technology and bring them to the attention of the management.
  • When necessary, obtain quotations for new instruments, and work with SGS procurement division to prepare necessary documents for management approval.
  • Ensure scheduled maintenance is carried out on instruments.  Accountable for routine and non routine equipment maintenance.
  • Supervise instrument troubleshooting and coordinate any necessary external services for repairs.
  • Prepare instrument SOPs, Work Instructions, and other applicable instrument documents with the QA Manager.
  • Conduct instrument training sessions for staff
  • Conduct QC crew talks for employees
  • Train & motivate staff, set goals, review performance and assess training needs, at least once a year. 
  • Plan and initiate procedures and systems necessary to ensure the maintenance and improvement of the company quality program.
  • Develop new laboratory methods in response to client/market needs.
  • Accountable for maintaining production and quality targets and ensuring optimal staff levels to achieve production, quality and financial targets.
  • Responsible for designing, co-ordinating and executing training programs that are consistent with management objectives, includes quality system awareness, continuous technical improvement and personnel performance reviews. 
  • Ensuring each person within their responsibility has undergone an orientation, and has sufficient knowledge for their safety and health while at work.
  • Ensuring that each person has sufficient information, resources and materials to do their job safely.
  • Directly responsible for their area housekeeping and cleanliness on a daily basis.
  • Directly responsible for ensuring all safety equipment is in place on a daily basis.

Qualifications

  • BSc. or Masters degree in Microbiology or related field with five or more years of experience in a commercial food testing laboratory at team lead or supervisory level.
  • Experience in a microbiological and/or chemical testing environment
  • Five years or more of experience in an operations/management role in a related field.
  • Ability to lead in accreditation process for lab including MFLP: Health Canada, MFHPB: Health Canada, CFIA, ISO 17025, And FDA.
  • Computer literate
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 17025:1999 requirements
  • Sound knowledge of good laboratory practices
  • Familiar with official accredited methods such as AOAC, AOCS and USP methodology.
  • Familiar with Agricultural and Food matrixes.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Agricultural sectors (Grain, Meat, Fishery, etc.) is required.
  • Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills including grammar and composition (Proficiency in French would be a strong asset).
  • Excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills; Excellent report writing skills.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with a demonstrated ability to lead and manage people.
  • Superior organizational, communication and interpersonal skills are essential. 
  • A sense of diplomacy and networking skills are essential to build relationships with external clients as well as key internal personnel.
  • Must be creative, innovative and client-focused.  
  • Previous experience providing client services is an asset.
  • Excellent customer service, client support, and business service consulting skills.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel. PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • A solid understanding of MS Project Management and Oracle applications would also be an asset.
