Reporting to: Site Manager / Assistant Manager

The Wet Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for all activities, operations and staff within the assigned department.

Supervise staff to carry out laboratory analysis according to established methods and meeting Quality Control (QC) standards.
• Schedule work flow through the department so that client deadlines are met in a timely fashion; monitor throughput and performance.
• Monitor and maintain lab QC standards.
• Plan and initiate procedures to ensure the company quality program is preserved and oversee quality audits.
• Solve day to day production and process problems within the department.
• Work in partnership with other supervisors to solve client problems to ensure quality and customer satisfaction standards are met.
• Train and motivate staff, set goals, review performance and assess training needs, at least once a year.
• Plan and initiate procedures and systems necessary to ensure the maintenance and improvement of the company quality program.
• Accountable for maintaining production and quality targets and ensuring optimal staff levels to achieve production, quality and financial targets.
• Responsible for designing, co-ordinating and executing training programs that are consistent with management objectives, includes quality system awareness, continuous technical improvement and personnel performance reviews.
• Ensuring each person within their responsibility has undergone an orientation, and has sufficient knowledge for their safety and health while at work.
• Ensuring that each person has sufficient information, resources and materials to do their job safely.
• Directly responsible for their area housekeeping and cleanliness on a daily basis.
• Accountable for routine and non routine equipment maintenance.
• Directly responsible for ensuring all safety equipment is in place on a daily basis.
• May be assigned and asked to co-ordinate special or ad hoc projects as needed.

Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving
• Sound knowledge of approved methods, Standard Operating Procedures, Work Instructions and QA/QC protocols.
• Monitors and maintains laboratory QC standards.
• Accountable for quality, identifying own/other’s errors in work and failures in procedures or processes. Initiates investigations.
• Makes necessary decisions related to their levels of skill and knowledge, collaborating with the Assistant and/or Operations Manager.
• Ability to seek advice and support from the Assistant and/or Operations Manager.
Job Complexity
• Incumbent is expected to construct, maintain and operate standard laboratory equipment, troubleshooting any failures.
• Ability to manage and direct numerous projects in a fast-paced, professional environment.
• Train and mentor new Analysts.
• Responsible for maintaining production flow by scheduling staff and meeting turnaround times, while ensuring all QA/QC requirements are met.
• Accountable for maintaining financial targets set by the Operations Manager, for the assigned department.
• Responsible for the quality produced by the department.
• Accountable for performance assessments and the technical development of all technicians within their department and initiating improvement plans when needed.
Impact of Decisions
• Deliver quality results in a timely manner meeting turnaround, to avoid the possible loss in revenue.
• Ensure all Health and Safety procedures and protocols are followed, to minimize hazards and prevent any injuries/incidents.
• Follow all QA/QC protocols to ensure compliance with ISO regulations, final results impact client decisions.
• Maintain production and quality targets, ensuring optimal staff levels to achieve production, quality and financial targets. Decisions may cause a direct impact on clients.
• Decisions have potential impact on clients and company goals, resulting in substantial outcome on the achievement of the organization.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience using laboratory instruments and the ability to operate and trouble-shoot them.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience in the supervising of small technical teams, ideally including the supervising of people in a minerals related laboratory.
  • Education: Minimum of a High School Diploma and/or Post-Secondary. Education in a Science related program or equivalent experience or training.
  • Experience: Minimum 1-3 years of relevant laboratory work.
  • experience required.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of previous supervisory experience is required.
  • Works well under pressure.
  • Extended hours and shift work may be required from time to time.
  • Travel to other SGS locations may be required from time to time.
