  • Operating a network of community-based certified farmers’ markets in Los Angeles.

  • Piloting and championing programs that stretch public nutrition benefits for the purchase of fresh, nutrient-rich food.  

  • Providing extensive nutrition education programs to low-income families and to children in underserved schools. 

  • Coordinating food relief for local families struggling with food insecurity. 

Job Description

STATUS:  Part-time, non-exempt (hourly)

REPORTS TO:  Manager, Market Facilities

LOCATION: Must be able to work Central Ave & Watt-Willowbrook Markets

  • Central Ave Farmers’ Market (Thursdays, 7 AM – 3:30 PM)
  • Watts/Willowbrook Farmers’ Market (Wednesdays, 7 AM – 3:30 PM)
  • Crenshaw Farmers’ Market (Saturdays, 8 AM – 5 PM)
  • Compton College Farmers’ Market (Wednesdays, 1 – 9:30 PM)

COMPENSATION: $18-$20/hour

BENEFITS:  48 hours PTO/year (accrued at 2 hours/pay period), 403b retirement plan, Lifeworks Employee Assistance Program

SCHEDULE: 8 –16 hours fill-in shifts ongoing.

 

Job Overview

The Fill-in Site Assistant works under the direction of the Manager, Market Facilities to assist and support with the set-up, maintenance, and breakdown of the Farmers’ Markets  or other SEE-LA farmers’ markets on an on-call, fill-in basis. The fill-in site assistant could also ideally be available to work at one or more of our other farmers’ markets:

Duties

  • Set up and breakdown the Farmers’ Market equipment, including but not limited to
    • information booth
    • Customer seating (multiple tables, tents, and chairs) o Parking area (cones and barricades)
    • Signage (A-frames and lollipop signs)
    • Trash bins
  • Maintain and fix market equipment, including canopies, tables, and chairs
  • Sweep + clean areas of the market as needed
  • Separate trash, recycling + green waste and empty waste bins regularly throughout the market day
  • Support the Market team as needed, including moving vendor equipment  
  • Assist with special market events and other tasks as needed 

Qualifications

  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • An interest in the following areas: Certified Farmers’ Markets, agriculture, nutrition, cooking, food assistance programs, local food and craft production, and community outreach/organizing
  • Spanish/ English bi-lingual skills preferred
  • Takes direction well; self-motivated; strong multitasking skills
  • Must be able to work Sundays or Thursdays
  • Some crisis/emergency management training and/or First Aid certification a plus

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This role involves physical activities to effectively support the necessary functions at SEE-LA's Farmers' Markets. Candidates should be capable of performing the following tasks:

  • Standing and Sitting: The employee will be required to stand for extended periods during market hours, interacting with customers and vendors. Additionally, sitting may be necessary for administrative tasks.

  • Communication and Dexterity: Effective communication is crucial as the role involves interacting with customers and vendors. Using hands and fingers to operate a tablet and telephone keyboard is essential for administration of clerical work.

  • Lifting and Setup: The role entails lifting tasks such as lifting boxes, setting up tents, and arranging tables. The ability to lift up to 50lbs is required for these tasks.

  • Stooping, Kneeling, and Squatting: The employee should be able to perform tasks that require stooping, kneeling, or squatting, such as arranging equipment and handling inventory.

  • Outdoor Work: Most of the work will take place outside, potentially in various weather conditions, including rain, heat, or cold. Candidates should be prepared to work comfortably in these conditions.
