Job Description

The Director, Systems Engineering is responsible for management of the people, process, tools, and execution that comprise the Systems Engineering organization. This is a full-time exempt position in which the work is performed under limited supervision by the Senior Director, Engineering, and is evaluated on results obtained.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

People

  • Responsible for annual performance reviews for all Systems Engineering managers and any other high-level personnel reporting to the Director with a focus on both past performance and future career growth opportunities
  • Responsible for talent acquisition within the Systems organization to ensure that the organization can meet the needs of both current programs as well as future development efforts.  This includes bringing on full-time/part-time employees as well as contractor labor support.
  • Lead Systems Engineering group communication, coordination, and engagement strategies
  • Training – plan and coordinate training for the Systems Engineering groups.
  • Mentor Systems Engineers in all aspects of Systems Engineering.

Process

  • Establishes consistency in Systems Engineering implementation, process/methodology, practices, management, and execution across all programs.
  • Maintain, enhance, and ensure compliance to documented SEAKR systems engineering processes
  • Define, document, and communicate a methodology for planning, managing and executing systems engineering on programs.
  • Represent the Systems Engineering organization in formal quality audits (e.g. AS9100)
  • Lead the Systems Engineering Process Group (SEPG) with an eye towards process compliance and enhancement
  • Keeps abreast of technologies, standards and methodologies that can improve systems engineering and overall group performance.

Tools

  • Ensure the Systems Engineering organization has tools needed to execute systems engineering efforts.  This includes tool assessment, budgeting, approval, and eventual rollout to the organization.

Execution

  • Ensure that the products SEAKR delivers will operate in the customers’ systems, that system level requirements accurately reflect what the customer expectations, that requirements are adequately verified, and that the customers’ technical questions are answered in a timely fashion.
  • Regularly participates in internal requirements, architecture, design, implementation, and test reviews
  • Support higher-level program reviews and customer meetings
  • With input from Program Execution and Product Development, provide staffing to systems engineering efforts within cost, schedule, and technical constraints.  This includes resolving staffing conflicts when they arise.
  • Actively participates in proposal efforts including aiding in the creation of system architectures, analysis, and cost information
  • Refines and drives systems engineering best practices across all programs

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Follow SEAKR SEPs and SEWIs as documented in SEAKRs quality system.
  • Follow SEAKR rules and regulations as documented in the SEAKR Employee Handbook and applicable operating procedures.
  • Participates in or prepares a variety of special projects at the direction of higher-level personnel.
  • Read professional journals and updates and attends seminars to keep aware of trends.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Duties:

  • Plans, organizes, and oversees the work of Systems Managers and other high-level personnel within the Systems organization
  • Reviews and evaluates performance, recommending salary increases and/or disciplinary action for direct reports & their subordinates.
  • Responsible for recommending required training to ensure all subordinate personnel are properly trained to perform their assigned duties.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of aerospace business and operations.
  • Knowledge of internal company operations as they relate to engineering.
  • Knowledge of how systems operate (hardware, software, structural, thermal, etc.).
  • Knowledge of requirement management environments.
  • Knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of SEAKR’s overall practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of a variety of software systems including Word, E-mail, Excel and their applicability to SEAKR’s operations.
  • Knowledge of proposal development, proposal writing, and costing of systems engineering efforts through BOEs, labor estimates and scope evaluation.
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with company policies and practices.
  • Ability to effectively analyze situations and recommend improvements.
  • Ability to work independently in the identification and coordination of programs.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish good rapport with members of management and other employees.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work on more than one task at a time.
  • Ability to operate the equipment listed below.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to proofread a variety of documents and to pay attention to detail.

Education or Formal Training

  • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, or the equivalent combination of training and experience

Experience

  • At least 8 years of experience in the development of high reliability systems is required.
  • At least 4 years of experience in personnel management is required.

Perform work in lab and professional office environments with a moderate level of noise and withstand outside environmental conditions when traveling building to building.

Additional Information

Compensation: Base pay range is $160,000 - $200,000 depending on qualifications. SEAKR has very rich medical, dental and vision insurance plans, along with a generous 401(k) retirement plan. In addition to base salary, employees are eligible for a year-end bonus. SEAKR offers a variety of paid leave, such as vacation, sick, bereavement, and FMLA.
