Job Description

Job Summary:

The System Administrator is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, maintenance and patching of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure for our Microsoft Windows & UNIX based platform. This person participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. The System Administrator ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures comply with internal and external standards and security requirements.

Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Engineering of solutions for various project and operational needs.
  • Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
  • Contribute to and maintain system standards.
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for system administration tasks.  Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
  • Support daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
  • Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.
  • Provide escalation support per request from various sources; investigate and troubleshoot issues.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures.  Coordinate and communicate with impacted parties.
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
  • Participate in on-call escalation rotations for 24x7x365 support; evening, overnight, and weekend, holiday and on-call work may be required.
  • Other tasks as assigned by management

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical or engineering field
  • Minimum of 2 – 4 years 
  • Experience in problem resolution with IT systems and individuals
  • Ability to interact with clients in a clear, concise, professional manner
  • Familiarity with a majority of the following:
  • Microsoft Windows Server Datacenter 2008 R2
  • Microsoft Windows Server Datacenter 2012
  • Internet Information Server (IIS)
  • Windows DNS / BIND / Named
  • Active Directory / LDAP
  • Redhat Linux & Sun Solaris
  • Solid understanding and working knowledge of complete systems development and deployment lifecycle and of all facets of systems administration in a large scale IT operations unit
