Job Description

The Texture Artist is responsible for creating realistic or stylized textures for a wide variety of objects and surfaces, in compliance with Rodeo FX's artistic, technical, and performance requirements. They work closely with the assets, shading, lookdev, and lighting teams to ensure seamless integration into the pipeline and contribute to the final quality of the delivered shots. Autonomous and rigorous, they are also a team player committed to the continuous evolution of their craft.

Key Responsibilities:

Master your craft

  • Create high-quality textures from photographic references, scans, digital paintings, or generative materials.
  • Adapt textures to the specific constraints of objects (organic, hard surface, props, environments) and the pipeline.
  • Maintain a rigorous approach to work, with a constant concern for clarity, legibility, and organization.
  • Respect deliverables, priorities, and deadlines established with the production team.

Creative quality

  • Interpret provided visual references and propose relevant and inspired artistic choices.
  • Ensure that textures effectively contribute to the visual coherence of assets and shots.
  • Refine details, variations, and visual richness according to the project's style.
  • Be attentive to artistic feedback and respond with openness and professionalism.

Technical quality

  • Produce optimized, technically solid textures ready for production use.
  • Understand the interaction between textures, shaders, and lighting in different contexts (e.g., lookdev, lighting, rendering).
  • Participate in the integration of textures into the pipeline, respecting nomenclature and resolution standards.
  • Detect and resolve technical issues related to UVs, displacements, tiling, color space, etc.

Communication

  • Maintain fluid dialogue with lookdev, shading, modeling, lighting artists, as well as supervisors.
  • Promptly report issues or blockages that may affect quality or deadlines.
  • Document technical and artistic choices when they deviate from standards.
  • Actively participate in dailies and team reviews with a constructive attitude.

Teach, learn and grow

  • Stay up-to-date on emerging texturing techniques and tools.
  • Share best practices and discoveries with colleagues.
  • Contribute to the improvement of department tools and processes.
  • Welcome feedback as a lever for continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 6 years of experience in texturing in a VFX or 3D animation environment.
  • Proficiency in Mari, Substance Painter and Designer, and Maya software.
  • Basic knowledge of Houdini, Nuke, and shading workflows (e.g., Solaris, Arnold, USD).
  • Good understanding of color management, UVs, PBR, and complex maps.
  • Strong ability to manage priorities and deliver meticulous work on time.
  • Collaborative spirit, curiosity, attention to detail, and autonomy.
  • Asset: knowledge of Flow Production Tracking or other production management tools.
  • Asset: experience in developing texturing tools or templates.
  • Asset: familiarity with real-time rendering constraints or multi-studio pipelines.

Additional Information

  • Proven experience as a Mid or Senior Artist.
  • Must be based in Montreal.
  • Canadian citizenship, permanent residency or open work permit is required.
  • Availability to work on-site at the studio 3 days a week.
