Job Description

The Visual Development Artist creates and refines the looks of 3D models to ensure hyperrealistic rendering, combining textures, shades, and surface properties. They contribute directly to the artistic and technical quality of delivered assets, ensuring they meet Rodeo FX's high standards and integrate harmoniously into sequences. Working closely with texturing, lighting, compositing, supervision, and production teams, they actively participate in the pipeline and in achieving creative and technical objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Master your craft

  • Develop and refine the looks of 3D models, ensuring their visual realism and technical solidity.
  • Prepare turntables and validation renders to evaluate artistic and technical quality.
  • Quickly integrate requested corrections and ensure asset finalization within deadlines.

Creative Quality

  • Propose relevant artistic solutions to improve renders and support the project's creative vision.
  • Ensure aesthetic consistency with other departments (textures, shading, lighting, compositing).
  • Maintain a high level of detail and realism to meet Rodeo FX's visual standards.

Technical Quality

  • Create and maintain a library of optimized shaders for various surface types.
  • Implement shading structures and Nuke scripts that promote efficiency in lighting and compositing stages.
  • Quickly detect and correct technical problems to avoid any pipeline blockages.

Communication

  • Collaborate closely with supervisors and colleagues from the Assets, Lighting, and Compositing departments to align working methods.
  • Keep the production team informed of progress, challenges, and potential deadlines.
  • Actively participate in dailies and constructive exchanges with the supervision team.

Teach, learn and grow

  • Share knowledge and best practices with department colleagues.
  • Contribute to the development of tools and techniques that promote efficiency and quality.
  • Stay up-to-date on technological and artistic advancements in Lookdev and propose their integration when relevant.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a VFX environment (minimum 6 years).
  • Proficiency in Katana and Nuke software.
  • Good knowledge of rendering engines such as Arnold.
  • Solid understanding of the production pipeline and interactions with other departments.
  • Rigor, autonomy, attention to detail, and a collaborative attitude.
  • Asset: knowledge of Flow Production Tracking.
  • Asset: experience in tool or script development.
  • Asset: familiarity with Houdini or Maya for inter-department integration.

Additional Information

  • Proven experience as a Mid or Senior Animation Artist.
  • Must be based in Montreal.
  • Canadian citizenship, permanent residency or open work permit is required.
  • Availability to work on-site at the studio 3 days a week.
