Job Description

The Technical Director - Technological Design acts as a key bridge between the creative and technical sides of the project. Working closely with designers, producers, and fabrication teams, this role involves conceiving, planning, and supervising the technical realization of multimedia and interactive installations. Combining artistic sensibility, engineering precision, and technological innovation, the Technical Director ensures that every technical solution supports the creative vision while respecting physical, budgetary, and regulatory constraints.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Design and Creative Support

  • Translate creative concepts into tangible technical solutions (lighting, video, sound, mechanics, interactivity, scenography).
  • Develop detailed technical drawings, plans, and models (AutoCAD, Vectorworks, SketchUp, etc.).
  • Propose creative and functional technological solutions aligned with the project’s artistic direction.
  • Anticipate technical, safety, and installation constraints early in the design process.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Actively participate in production and creative meetings, representing the project’s technical perspective.
  • Collaborate closely with artistic, production, engineering, and fabrication teams to ensure project coherence and feasibility.
  • Communicate effectively with suppliers, contractors, artisans, and technicians to guarantee quality and consistency.
  • Foster a collaborative culture focused on problem-solving and innovation.

Engineering, Innovation, and Feasibility

  • Assess the technical and budgetary feasibility of proposed concepts.
  • Integrate emerging technologies, materials, and interactive systems that enhance creative experiences.
  • Identify technical risks and recommend alternative solutions that meet project objectives.
  • Contribute to R&D initiatives aimed at evolving the studio’s technological design practices.

Technical Management and Documentation

  • Prepare and maintain all technical documentation (plans, technical sheets, equipment lists, installation constraints).
  • Manage equipment inventories and coordinate procurement, maintenance, and logistics.
  • Oversee testing, installation, and dismantling phases to ensure safety, compliance, and technical excellence.
  • Ensure the technical quality and consistency of all deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in technical direction, technological design, or production coordination in the fields of performing arts, events, or multimedia.
  • Strong knowledge of video, sound, lighting, and interactive systems.
  • Proficiency in technical design software (AutoCAD, Vectorworks, SketchUp, or equivalent).
  • Strong artistic sensibility and ability to translate creative intent into technical execution.
  • Solid understanding of safety, electrical, and machinery standards.
  • Curiosity and drive for innovation, with a genuine interest in emerging materials and technologies.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across disciplines.
