Job Description
The CG Supervisor is responsible for all CG aspects of a show, ensuring work meets the high quality standards of Rodeo FX and the specifications of the project. Working closely with the VFX Supervisor and VFX Producer, they establish the workflow and methodology for the project, taking into consideration the technical challenges, the Rodeo FX pipeline, and the client's creative vision.
Main responsibilities:
- In conjunction with the VFX Supervisor, take responsibility for the visual and technical quality of all CG deliverables, in accordance with Rodeo FX’s high quality standards;
- Work with the VFX Supervisor to develop and create the visual appearance of the project;
- Establish and maintain the workflow and methodology that will be applied throughout the project, ensuring the best creative and technical approach to meet project requirements, budgets and deadlines. Outline the technical needs that arise from the project, and suggest appropriate procedures to the VFX Sup to address them;
- Anticipate and eliminate problems that could arise from any work tool, before they can negatively impact production. Initiate and follow-up on any tool development required, ensuring clear directives to the development team;
- Understand and respect the requirements of the client as well as the project’s specifications, and attend Cinesync sessions;
- In conjunction with the VFX Supervisor and Production, identify the resources needed for the project and participate in the casting of artists on projects;
- Communicate the creative vision and objectives to their team, ensuring individual and/or team responsibility for results are understood;
- Direct the artists in their work and closely monitor the quality of work produced. Attend dailies sessions, review assets and shots and make sure work follows proper methodology and corresponds with client’s artistic vision;
- Resolve visual, artistic and technical issues throughout the project, working with other supervisors and escalating to the Head of Department as needed;
- Monitor upcoming milestones and keep the VFX Supervisor and VFX Producer informed of the status of work, issues to be resolved, ramifications of problems encountered and potential solutions;
- Assist the VFX Supervisor with final approvals for shots before they are sent out. Ensure a technical check of the visual effects is completed before delivery to the VFX Supervisor;
- Review results of mid and post-mortem assessments, identify areas for improvement and ensure that all issues are addressed going forward. Complete mid & post mortem reviews for the artists with whom they worked directly;
- Intervene rapidly with team members who do not meet the set objectives, ethics or work methods, by proposing solutions and clarifying expectations. Notify the Head of Department of any repetitive or serious issues;
- Actively monitor the work climate in the team, ensure the maintenance of a positive work environment and adherence to company values;
- Mentor members of their team by providing training and sharing knowledge. Communicate any specific training needs to the Head of Department. May participate in preparing training materials or giving group training sessions;
- May assist the production team with bidding for shows;
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of their specialty and be on the lookout for the latest technological advances in methods and approaches.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a CG Supervisor within the VFX industry.
- Proven experience in managing a team of artists.
- Proficiency in English for working with international clients and French for collaborating with the local team.
- Strong knowledge of production tracking workflows.
- Experience with a USD pipeline is ideal.
- Strong proficiency in Houdini, Maya, and all standard VFX industry software.
- Excellent understanding of the VFX production pipeline.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure while acting as a positive role model and mentor.
