The Director of Sustaining Engineering is responsible for leading the technical execution and operational excellence of products in high-volume production. This role ensures stable manufacturing, continuous yield improvement, cost optimization, and successful execution of sustaining activities across semiconductor product lines.
This leader owns resolution of production issues, drives systematic improvements, enables capacity expansion and test conversions, and ensures product reliability and quality throughout the production lifecycle. The role requires strong cross-functional leadership across Product Engineering, Test Engineering, Operations, Quality, Reliability, and OSAT partners to maintain uninterrupted supply and improve product performance at scale.
This position complements NPI execution by focusing on post-release product health, factory performance, and long-term manufacturability excellence.
Job Description
Production Support & Issue Resolution
Own end-to-end resolution of production issues across fab, assembly, and test
Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for yield excursions, test escapes, and reliability issues
Drive structured problem-solving (8D, 5-Why) and enforce closed-loop corrective actions
Partner with Quality and Operations to manage customer returns and field reliability concerns
Yield Improvement & Cost Optimization
Drive continuous yield improvement through data analytics, parametric monitoring, and defect reduction
Lead cost reduction initiatives, including test time reduction, multisite optimization, and scrap reduction
Monitor product KPIs (yield, DPPM, test cost, cycle time) and drive corrective actions
Capacity Expansion & Manufacturing Readiness
Lead engineering support for factory and OSAT capacity expansion initiatives
Own qualification and release of additional manufacturing capacity (sites, lines, tools)
Ensure readiness for high-volume production, including alignment of test capability and manufacturing flow
Partner with Operations on demand/capacity balancing and risk mitigation
Test Strategy Execution in Production
Drive production test optimization, including test conversions across ATE platforms
Ensure correlation, stability, and scalability of test solutions in manufacturing
Support test coverage improvements, cost optimization, and hardware/software transitions
Partner with Test Engineering and Test Architecture teams for long-term platform strategy
Change Management & Product Lifecycle Support
Own execution of PCNs, ECOs, and manufacturing transfers
Ensure robust change control processes with minimal disruption to production
Support EOL and last-time-buy activities and long-term product sustainability planning
Cross-Functional Leadership
Lead global sustaining engineering teams across multiple sites
Act as primary interface between Product Engineering, Test, Quality, Reliability, and Operations
Drive alignment on priorities, issue escalation, and factory performance improvement
Build strong engagement with OSATs and internal manufacturing partners
Organization & Business Leadership
Own sustaining engineering roadmap, metrics, and performance tracking
Manage headcount, budget, and capital planning related to sustaining/test infrastructure
Build and develop a high-performing global team
Drive standardization, best practices, and scalable processes across product lines
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (advanced degree preferred)
12–15+ years of semiconductor experience across Product Engineering, Test Engineering, or Manufacturing
Proven leadership experience managing teams in high-volume production environments
Strong expertise in:
Yield analysis and improvement
Failure analysis and root cause methodologies
Semiconductor manufacturing flows (fab, assembly, test)
ATE systems and production test methodologies
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with power semiconductors (modules, controllers, PMICs, Si/SiC/GaN)
Experience with OSATs and global supply chain manufacturing
Strong background in test conversions and ATE platform strategy
Familiarity with data center power applications and high-reliability requirements
