Job Description
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Application Ownership
- Serve as a technical authority for low-voltage GaN discrete devices and GaN-based IC solutions.
- Establish system-level best practices for high-frequency switching, gate driving, PCB layout, EMI mitigation, thermal optimization, and robustness.
Provide application expertise for:
- o Datacenter power systems (auxiliary rails, high-current DC-DC, control and bias supplies)
- o Solar energy and energy storage systems (low-voltage DC architectures, auxiliary converters)
- o Audio power applications (high-efficiency Class-D power stages, low-noise power conversion)
- o Battery-powered and distributed power systems
- o Designs transitioning from silicon MOSFETs to GaN
Reference Design & Evaluation Platform Development
- Architect and develop low-voltage GaN reference designs and evaluation platforms using discrete GaN FETs, half-bridge stages, and integrated GaN ICs.
- Demonstrate clear system-level advantages over silicon solutions, including:
- Higher switching frequencies
- Improved efficiency across load conditions
- Increased power density
- Reduced thermal footprint
- Lead board bring-up, lab characterization, waveform optimization, and performance benchmarking.
Product Validation
- Define and execute application-driven product validation strategies for low-voltage GaN discretes and GaN ICs.
- Validate performance across:
- Switching behavior and dynamic characteristics
- Safe operating limits and robustness
- Thermal performance and derating
- EMI behavior and layout sensitivity
- Application-specific stress conditions relevant to datacenter, solar, and audio systems
- Collaborate closely with design, test, and quality teams to ensure strong correlation between lab validation and real-world customer use cases.
- Identify corner cases and system-level interactions to improve product robustness and customer guidance.
Customer Enablement & Expert Support
- Act as a trusted technical advisor to customers adopting low-voltage GaN-based power stages, including those migrating from silicon MOSFET solutions.
- Perform schematic reviews, PCB layout reviews, and system-level debugging.
- Deliver technical workshops, training sessions, and in-depth design reviews.
Technical Collateral & Thought Leadership
- Develop high-quality application notes, design guides, and white papers focused on:
- Low-voltage GaN integration best practices
- High-frequency power stage design
- MOSFET-to-GaN migration strategies
- Noise-, efficiency-, and thermal-optimized designs
- Represent Renesas in customer engagements and technical forums.
Mentorship & Cross-Team Collaboration
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, strengthening application engineering capability.
- Collaborate closely with R&D, marketing, test, and quality teams to ensure strong technical alignment and execution excellence.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Ph.D. in Power Electronics or a related discipline preferred.
- Experience
- 8+ years of experience in power electronics design or application engineering.
- Strong hands-on background in low-voltage power stages using silicon MOSFETs and/or GaN devices.
- · Demonstrated experience supporting customer designs in high-performance power applications.
- Technical Expertise
- Deep understanding of low-voltage power electronics, fast-switching devices, and wide-bandgap behavior.
- Practical experience with:
- Low-voltage GaN discretes and integrated GaN ICs
- Gate-drive optimization and power stage design
- High-frequency PCB layout techniques
- Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Altium preferred).
- Experience with simulation tools such as PLECS, LTspice, Simplis, or Simetrix.
- Knowledge of magnetic component selection and optimization.
Preferred
- Exposure to power management firmware or digital control loops.
- Familiarity with reliability, EMI, and compliance considerations.
Soft Skills
- Strong customer-facing communication skills.
- Excellent system-level problem-solving and troubleshooting capability.
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts into practical design guidance.
