Job Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE

  • The Retail Staff Accountant is responsible for providing support in preparing, developing, and maintaining accurate and timely financial reports, records and general ledgers in accordance with US GAAP for Red Wing Shoe Company retail stores.  The Staff Accountant responsibilities include processing general ledger journal entries; preforming monthly reconciliations; and reviewing monthly operating expenses and trends.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform daily / monthly accounting duties including trouble shooting of differences and errors through data mining, detail analysis, and research.  Prepare and process correcting journal entries to maintain accurate financial records. 
  • Prepare timely, complete and accurate balance sheet reconciliations and ensure compliance with accounting policies and US GAAP
  • Support the month end close timelines and communicate issues.  Report actual results, update and communicate key business metrics and provide insightful variance analysis for assigned accounts. 
  • Maintain accounting policies in accordance with US GAAP
  • Analyze large volumes of data using worksheet and database skills to summarize into meaningful information for decision making
  • Support the annual audit with the preparation of assigned PBC requests
  • Perform or review GL account reconciliations and resolve any accounting discrepancies and irregularities in accordance with corporate policy
  • Assist with special projects and accounting research as needed
  • Work in a team environment to streamline and drive improvement in financial processes

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A/B.S.) required preferably in the area of Finance, Accounting or a related field from an accredited College or University; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong initiative to explore alternatives, recommend improvements, and implement recommendations
  • Team oriented player

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Fundamental knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal controls.
  • Must possess strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in a pro-active manner, or within a team environment.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills.  Active listening skills are equally important
  • Demonstrated analytical, quantitative and problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing organizational needs
  • Excellent oral, written, and communication skills, the ability to adapt to change, and most importantly, the ability to work well in a team
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all departments, management levels within the company and outside partners
  • Must be able to drive results and manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines
  • Experience with financial systems, consolidation systems such as BPC or Hyperion is a plus
  • Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Excel.  Basic knowledge in Word and Outlook as well as the ability to optimize business technology tools to improve business processes
  • Ability to learn and use multiple systems and applications and manage multiple priorities
