Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:

 Research, develop, and implement the necessary processes, recipes, and equipment for tanning leather and manufacturing footwear.  Solve complex production issues related to chemical processing of various materials using Lean-Sigma principles, engineering /quality tools, advanced test and analytical methodology, and technology.   Manage and implement process improvement projects.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Provide technical leadership for chemical related process improvements and projects.

  1. Manage external suppliers utilized on specific projects to assure achievement of agreed upon performance objectives.

  2. Identify opportunities to standardize products and processes to optimize performance and develop/initiate action plans.

  3. Drive and manage projects from concept to completion including but not limited to developing project plans, measures of success, performance tracking and reporting, remediation planning, sustaining results.

  4. Effectively utilize Design of Experiments methodology, simulation software and analytical test methods including but not limited to LEAN TPS and 6-sigma to optimize and improve production processes.

  5. Effectively apply scientific principles related to heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and organic/bio-chemistry.

  6. Conduct lab experimentation using FTIR, DCS, GC/MS, and other analytical test methods.

  7. Ensure that equipment works to its specification and to appropriate capacities.

  8. Lead safety and environmental compliance for all chemical related processes and improvements and ensure/role model compliance with all other company and regulatory policies/procedures (e.g., quality, finance, HR, legal, sourcing).

  9. Effectively collaborate and communicate with functional and cross-functional team members.

  10. Ensure safe working conditions and compliance with health and safety legislation.

  11. Champion where appropriate and/or participate in research and implementation of new technology solutions.

  15. Obtain necessary information by maintaining knowledge of RWSC’s electronic communication software.

  16. Maintain quality service by establishing, following, and enforcing organization quality system standards.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

 

  1. Bachelor Degree (Master Degree preferred) in Chemical Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university and three to five years related experience. 

  2. Working knowledge and expertise with biomaterials and polymers strongly preferred.

  3. Excellent communication and people skills required to successfully work with all levels of employees including hourly associates, senior management and vendors.

  4. Excellent Microsoft Office skills (especially Excel).

  5. The position requires varied manufacturing, process and material experience along with a strong general engineering background, analytic aptitude and practical application.

  6. Hands-on experience with laboratory prototyping, safety analysis and protocols for safe handling of hazardous agents, re-agents, chemicals and materials.

  7. Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.

  8. Exceptional problem-solving skills and creativity.

  9. Drive for results and superior execution.

  10. Ability to appropriately prioritize, multi-task and adapt to unexpected changes.

  11. Attention to detail, and ability perform multiple tasks simultaneously and accurately.

  12. Must be able to adjust rapidly to shifting priorities and variable workloads.

  13. Must have adequate computer skills for data gathering, management and analysis.

  14. Work under minimal supervision.

  15. LEAN 6 sigma and TPS knowledge/practical experience.

     

    ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

     

  16. Minitab experience

  17. Microsoft Project experience

  18. Willingness to work in wet environments.

     

    REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR KNOWLEDGE:

     

  • Knowledge and understanding of material control and ERP systems
