Reporter - Wales Online
- Full-time
- Contract Type: Permanent
- Location: Home & Hub - Cardiff
- Division: Editorial
- Salary Currency: GBP Sterling
- Department: Regionals
Company Description
We’re looking for a reporter to explore the stories and issues which matter to people in Wales. You will be working on WalesOnline, one of the UK’s best and biggest regional news websites. We’re open to applications from candidates with different levels of experience - whether you are an experienced senior reporter or specialist, or someone looking for their first full-time role in a newsroom.
The ideal candidate will be driven, curious and passionate about the issues affecting people in communities across Wales. We’re looking for people who are good listeners, are bursting with great questions and adept at telling stories across a variety of platforms whether it be holding local politicians to account on a live stream to a Tiktok review of the latest restaurant opening. If you’ve got a great idea for a newsletter, video, social post, podcast or interactive article then we want to hear it.
WalesOnline specialises in brilliant, detailed, interactive and ambitious storytelling. We’re looking for people who will enjoy weaving together a detailed special report using multi-media content as much as running a live blog piecing together the latest from a breaking news scene.
We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important so we can continue to diversify our content.
So, who are we?
We are WalesOnline, the biggest and best online news platform in Wales. We’re part of Reach Plc, which is home to the UK and Ireland’s most iconic digital platforms, magazines and newspapers. From the Mirror, Daily Express and OK!, to our regional titles such as the Liverpool Echo, BirminghamLive and the Manchester Evening News (plus lots more), our brands and the stories we cover are as varied as our people. We help all kinds of people share experiences through our stories because we believe this is what makes us human.
Oh, and we should probably also mention that with a monthly readership of 47 million people, Reach is the largest commercial publisher in the UK. At Reach, not only will you feel better understood, you will also feel you understand other people better too.
Due to the nature of the role we would consider both a junior or senior candidate for this position.
We are happy to consider applications on a flexible working basis, and will always aim to accommodate requests where possible.
This role is home and hub based linked to our Cardiff hub and you will therefore need to be based in Wales.
Job Description
What will the role involve?
You will write and develop stories about local communities, with great pictures and engaging videos, but you will also create maps and graphics, host live Q&As, author newsletters on topics which engage our readers and develop interactive content formats which set us apart from our rivals. All while ensuring that every piece of content is researched and published in accordance with the Editor’s Code of practice. You will be confident using a range of digital formats and quickly identify breaking news by utilising social media.
Qualifications
Who are we looking for?
An experienced journalist with your NCTJ or equivalent qualification and media law knowledge or for trainee candidates with NCTJ preliminary or equivalent, you have the ability to be bold, confident and to be comfortable meeting people face to face, developing a strong contacts book. You will also ideally possess a driving licence.
You have first rate editing, writing and subbing skills, relish the test of working under pressure and to tight deadlines. You’re social media savvy with current SEO knowledge and ideally you're familiar with newsroom analytics and content management systems. You’re flexible, inquisitive and are on the pulse of what makes a great story.
