Do you want to play a pivotal role in the award-winning team that produces Glasgow Live, Edinburgh Live and Aberdeen Live? Do you have a wealth of digital news experience and passion for local journalism? Then you may be our new Assistant Editor.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced journalist to edit and report in a fast-paced live news environment. You will work closely with editors and reporters across all three of Reach PLC’s Scottish Live sites.

This unique role involves subbing news and features across each site, handling copy produced in-house and externally, and writing original material to tight deadlines. 

We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important from our many communities so we can continue to diversify our content.

This is a hybrid working role that can be linked to any of our Scottish hubs. We are therefore open to candidates based anywhere in Scotland.

Job Description

What will the role involve?

  • Helping to manage news reporters working on city patches, to achieve digital audience growth and engagement targets
  • Subbing and editing copy and headlines to high standards, ensuring all content meets legal and IPSO requirements
  • Supporting reporters as they work on strong exclusive content and ensure teams beat our rivals to breaking news
  • Ensuring effective use of social media and SEO tools by newsroom staff
  • Deputising for editors as needed, fostering a high-performance culture by setting clear expectations and having in-the-moment performance discussions
  • Being an ambassadorial for your region’s brands and the business as a whole, in person and via social media, acting as a champion for our news brands
  • Supporting local and executive management in the delivery of overall strategy
  • This role will involve working shifts on a rota basis including some weekends/evenings so a flexible approach is required

Qualifications

Who are we looking for?

You are an experienced and passionate journalist with an NCTJ or equivalent qualification (or time served). You may be a current content editor looking to work across multiple brands, or you may be a senior reporter who is ready to step up into an editor role. You have the skills to manage and support people, excellent storytelling techniques and a superb knowledge of social media. 

You have a proven track record of sourcing, writing and publishing news content in a fast paced newsroom environment, with a wealth of experience in digital publishing. You know what makes regional content engaging and can inspire your team to do the same. You know how to drive traffic to your content and an unbeatable news sense.
