Company Description

We are looking for an Assistant News Editor to join us at the Express's website

This is a fantastic opportunity for a senior journalist to join the newsdesk at one of the biggest websites in the country.

The successful candidate will be responsible for taking the lead on the biggest stories of the day whilst inspiring and supervising a large team of news reporters.

You will play a significant role in shaping and setting the news agenda for an audience of millions around the world.

We are looking for an experienced, motivated and versatile journalist who can write stories when required but also edit stories accurately and quickly.

Unlike some newsrooms we actively encourage all team members to be pitching their own ideas every day and while we work hard we really want people to enjoy the job and you'll be joining a talented, motivated and welcoming team.

You may be a reporter on a national title or news agency ready to step up to newsdesk or a news editor on a regional title who is ready to join a national.

This role is home and hub-based linked to our London hub with three days per week based in the office. You will be working different shift patterns and some weekends.

Job Description

What will the role involve?

  • You will manage a team of reporters every day covering that day’s biggest stories while ensuring we’re bringing in our own exclusives.
  • You will have to make smart choices on the best stories to cover and be able to work calmly under pressure when working to very tight deadlines.
  • Growing our digital audience will be a top priority - and you’ll need to be passionate about doing it.
  • We also want someone who will bring in bags of ideas for features and moving on the day’s biggest stories.
  • You will do one-to-ones with reporters and may need to lead digital conferences, represent the department and work with other editorial leaders.
  • You will need to be an accomplished headline writer who understands how to make each story we write reach the largest audience possible.
  • You’ll need to ensure all content is legally and IPSO compliant while taking an interest in development of staff and ensuring the department’s culture is open and inclusive.

Qualifications

Who are we looking for?

You are an experienced journalist with your NCTJ or equivalent qualification and media law knowledge. You will be a versatile, calm and experienced digital media expert and ideally will have worked for a national or regional website before.

You will need to manage a talented, driven team with ease, and be able to support and direct in a pressured and frequently changing environment.

You will need first rate communication skills and a strong work ethic, with the ability to create content at pace and assess analytics to determine what our readers actually want to read.

You will enjoy the test of working to tight deadlines and experience of SEO would be beneficial.
