News Reporter - Express Online

  • Full-time
  • Contract Type: Permanent
  • Location: Home & Hub - London
  • Division: Editorial
  • Salary Currency: GBP Sterling
  • Department: Nationals

Company Description

Express.co.uk is looking for a News Reporter to join one of the most talented newsrooms in the country. This is a fantastic opportunity to work for one of the UK’s biggest news sites.

You may have a proven track record in digital journalism at delivering brilliant exclusives and fantastic page views in equal measure. Or you may have recently completed your NCTJ and be ready to show just how good a journalist you are.

We are looking for someone who is full of ideas, great at interviewing and a talented writer. You will want to bring in stories nobody else has broken and be passionate about how many people read your work. Unlike some newsrooms we encourage reporters to pitch their own ideas and we want reporters to work hard but genuinely enjoy the work they are doing.

Over the last year we’ve had reporters on the ground covering the recent riots, out in Germany with fans for the Euros and in Tenerife for the big over-tourism protest. Our reporters cover everything from the war in Ukraine to over-tourism in Cornwall - all in a way that differentiates us from our rivals.

We are looking for candidates with experience writing for a national website or paper, agency or a busy regional title. But we are also looking for highly motivated and ambitious trainees straight out of training courses.

This role is home and hub-based linked to our London Canary Wharf hub. We are therefore open to candidates based in and around London or willing to move to the area.

Job Description

What will the role involve?

  • Writing stories and features that will drive lots of traffic to our website.
  • Bringing in exclusives and pitching ideas that will work for our audience.
  • Covering breaking news quickly and accurately through live blogs and breakouts.
  • Being versatile - as well as covering the day’s big stories we help our World News, Royal and Politics teams.
  • Understanding audience analytics and the use of stats to dictate how we headline stories and how we shape news lists.
  • As well as covering the biggest hard news stories of each day we also need lighter stories and features which will generate a large audience at weekends and on quiet news days.
  • Working a mixture of shifts including some evenings and weekends when required.
  • Working with colleagues on our print team so that as much of what we do as possible can be used in the paper.

Qualifications

Who are we looking for?

  • NCTJ or equivalent journalism degree and knowledge of media law
  • A strong understanding of the unique nature of digital news
  • An excellent knowledge of current affairs and a passion for national and international news
  • An eye for detail to bring stories to life
  • Excellent contacts or drive to make and maintain new contacts
  • An ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure
