Associate Structural Engineer

Job Description

Associate Structural Engineer – Bristol

We invite you to bring your talent and passion into play as an Associate Structural Engineer in our growing Bristol team.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced structural engineer who wants to combine technical leadership, project delivery, client relationships and business growth. You’ll play an important role in our Industry & Infrastructure Facilities (I&IF) team, helping us deliver technically interesting projects while also helping shape and grow our presence in Bristol.

If you are looking for a role where you can remain close to engineering, work with great people and have a genuine influence on the direction of a growing team, we’d love to hear from you.

A great place to build your career

You’ll join our Industry & Infrastructure Facilities (I&IF) team in Bristol – a growing regional team with a real sense of community and a strong focus on technical excellence.

Our work spans a diverse range of sectors, including rail, aviation, energy, manufacturing, data centres and other critical infrastructure. The variety of our work means you’ll have the opportunity to apply your structural engineering expertise to different challenges, clients and sectors.

We work across the project lifecycle, from early feasibility and concept development through to detailed design and construction. We also work closely with colleagues across Ramboll, bringing together structural, civil, MEP, sustainability and other specialist expertise to deliver integrated solutions.

Why Bristol?

We’re a smaller regional team, which means you’ll have the opportunity to make a real contribution and see the impact of your work. There is a strong sense of community, with technically excellent people around you who are keen to share knowledge, support each other and help you develop.

We also like to have some fun. Our active Bristol social team organises activities ranging from padel and other sports to pub quizzes and informal team events.

Our Bristol office is in a great location, close to Temple Meads and Bristol city centre, providing a collaborative and accessible base for our growing team.

Your role

Your role As an Associate Structural Engineer, you will have a broad role combining technical, project, people and business responsibilities.

You will:

  • Lead the structural design and delivery of technically complex or specialised projects, taking responsibility for technical quality and project outcomes.
  • Develop structural concepts, design philosophies and innovative engineering solutions.
  • Act as a technical point of reference for colleagues, sharing your knowledge and providing coaching and guidance to other engineers.
  • Take responsibility for client relationships and represent Ramboll at project and technical meetings.
  • Work closely with architects, contractors and other disciplines to develop practical, coordinated and efficient solutions.
  • Promote sustainable and low-carbon approaches to structural design, including reuse and efficient use of materials.
  • Support the development of the Bristol I&IF team and contribute to building our technical capability.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the way we deliver our work and develop new services and areas of expertise.

Help shape our Bristol growth

A key part of this role will be helping to develop and deliver the Bristol I&IF growth strategy.

Working closely with the Bristol I&IF leadership team and our Growth & Business Development colleagues, you will:

  • Help identify sectors, clients and opportunities where Ramboll’s expertise can add value.
  • Contribute to the development of our local market and client strategy.
  • Build and maintain relationships with existing and prospective clients.
  • Help develop and pursue opportunities, from early conversations through to bids and appointments.
  • Work with colleagues across Ramboll to identify opportunities to bring together our wider multidisciplinary expertise.
  • Play a key role in turning the Bristol I&IF growth strategy into action and helping to build a sustainable pipeline of work.

We are looking for someone who is curious about clients and their challenges, enjoys building relationships and wants to play an active role in shaping the future of the team.

What we’re looking for

For this role, we believe your starting point is:

  • Chartered with the IStructE, ICE or an international equivalent.
  • Significant experience as a structural engineer, with a strong track record of delivering technically challenging projects.
  • A high level of technical competence and sound engineering judgement across steel, concrete and/or timber.
  • Experience taking technical responsibility for projects and providing guidance to other engineers.
  • The ability to work independently on complex or specialised engineering problems, with limited oversight.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex engineering principles clearly to clients, colleagues and other stakeholders.
  • The ability to develop strong and lasting relationships with clients and collaborators.
  • A collaborative approach and a willingness to coach and support others.
  • A commercial mindset and an interest in understanding clients’ needs and identifying opportunities.
  • A passion for finding better, more efficient and more sustainable ways of solving engineering problems.

Experience in rail, aviation, energy, manufacturing, data centres or other critical infrastructure is essential, but we don’t expect you to have experience across all of these areas. We are interested in strong engineers who are excited by the opportunity to apply their skills to new and varied challenges.

Your opportunity to make a difference

This is an opportunity to join a team that is growing and have a genuine influence on what it becomes.

You’ll have the support of experienced technical specialists across Bristol, the wider UK I&IF team and Ramboll’s international network, while having the autonomy to lead projects, develop client relationships, support colleagues and contribute to the growth strategy for the Bristol business.

If you’re looking for an Associate role where you can combine great engineering with leadership, client relationships and business growth – while remaining part of a close-knit regional team – we’d love to hear from you.
