Job Description

The Role 

Are you a visionary leader with a passion for animal welfare? We're seeking an experienced Head of Animal Welfare to elevate our programs across all racing codes.

The Head of Animal Welfare is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing and enhancing our animal welfare programs across the racing spectrum and for all three racing codes. This role demands an innovator with a strong background in animal welfare and the ability to drive progress and influence across our organisation and the broader racing industry. The Head of Animal Welfare will manage a dedicated team, develop and support the implementation of comprehensive welfare strategies, and build robust relationships with stakeholders to ensure our mission of supporting the highest standards for racing animal welfare at all stages of their lives is achieved.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and execute RWWA’s animal welfare strategy. 
  • Lead greyhound and equine welfare initiatives. 
  • Stay updated on industry trends, relevant legislation and best practice relating to animal welfare. 
  • Direct resources for maximum impact on emerging issues. 

Program Oversight: 

  • Enhance adoption and support programs for retired racing animals (Greyhounds as Pets and Off the Track WA). 
  • Oversee new welfare initiatives for greyhounds and horses. 

Marketing & Partnerships: 

  • Promote adoption programs and welfare initiatives. 
  • Utilise marketing resources to drive demand for retired racing animals. 
  • Build strong community and stakeholder relationships. 

Industry, Stakeholder & Government Liaison

  • Serve as the spokesperson on animal welfare issues.
  • Engage with industry representatives, equine and greyhound welfare stakeholders and national bodies.

Qualifications

About You 

 

  • Degree in Veterinary Science, Animal Welfare, Animal Science, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in animal welfare management, with a strong background in the racing industry or similar sectors desirable.
  • Proven track record of effective leadership and team management, with the ability to inspire and drive change.
  • Excellent strategic planning, organisational, and communication skills. Ability to influence and negotiate with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • In-depth understanding of animal welfare standards, regulations, and best practices within the racing industry and at the state and federal level.
