Job Description

This is an exciting full-time opportunity for an individual with the knowledge and passion for thoroughbred racing to secure a position within the WA Racing Industry. We are currently seeking applications from motivated candidates for the position of Handicapper/Judge Thoroughbreds.  

Reporting to the Thoroughbred Operations Manager, you will be responsible for handicapping provincial and country race meetings and judging at metropolitan and provincial race meetings. The successful candidate will be acting as first point of contact with key racing industry participants. Some of the tasks & duties include:  

  • Applying relevant criteria to determine the weight of horses and establish positions in the ballot for thoroughbred provincial and country race meetings 
  • Assist Thoroughbred Operations Manager and Senior Handicapper with various duties, as required 
  • Distribute race fields to industry participants, wagering operators and media outlets. 
  • Supervise the timely receipt of enquiries, nominations, acceptances, etc. and preparation of race books to industry level 
  • Respond to enquiries on handicapping and programming issues and complaints, racing, country racing, etc. while liaise with other RWWA divisions on race dates & policies and assist in setting race times. 
  • Check and sign off scratching fees and race meeting payment summary reports for all race meetings and liaise with Thoroughbred Finance Department accordingly 
  • Provide information and statistical information to assist in race programming including updating information to Thoroughbred Operations Manager of racing issues 
  • Respond to all Westspeed related enquiries from industry participants. 
  • Supervise Assistant Judge and Photo Finish operators 
  • Ensure all horses are placed accurately in their finishing position in all races and the accurate allocation of thoroughbred numbers in running 
  • Ensure times and margins for all races are accurately recorded and loaded into the racing system 
  • Ensure the highest quality and operation of photo finish equipment to guarantee the accurate placement of horses in all races and trials  

Qualifications

About you

  • Experience in the areas of handicapping, judging, race programming and racing services functions 
  • The ability to liaise effectively with both external and internal clients 
  • Experience in supervision of a team 
  • Knowledge of general handicapping policies and procedures 
  • Knowledge of Rules of (thoroughbred) Racing and local rules 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the racing and wagering industry 
  • Good communicator with negotiating and interpersonal skills 
  • Have a problem solving and analytical skills within the scope of the position’s responsibilities 
  • Well-developed numeracy/attention to detail skills  
  • Ability to prioritise/control workload while work as part of a team, with or without supervision  
  • Sound computer literacy skills – Microsoft Office / Windows environment 
  • Completion of Year 12
