Job Description

The Opportunity 

Our Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) team is looking for an Animal Behaviourist on a casual basis. If you are a proactive, and flexible-minded individual who has the experience and enthusiasm to promote the rehoming of retired greyhounds, then we are looking forward to hearing from you. 

Reporting to the GAP Program Manager, this position will be developing, coordinating, and assisting with GAP Programs and a focus on behaviour and training initiatives. 

As part of the GAP team, you will:

  • Undertake assessments and work to address behaviour issues observed in greyhounds with behaviour modification programs
  • Provide training in canine behaviour and handling to staff and volunteers as required
  • Liaise with foster carers/adoptive owners around greyhound behaviour problems, RWWA Vets and external veterinary clinics 
  • Conduct assessments of the greyhounds
  • Conduct face to face, training and behaviour consultation sessions with foster carers and adoptive owners
  • Maintain day to day oversight of volunteers in the volunteer program, including dog handling and conducting volunteer inductions and training.
  • Review internal behaviour assessment and recording protocols
  • Support GAP Officers and GAP Program Manager in achieving positive rehoming outcomes and smooth running of the GAP office in Southern River
  • Assist with the planning and attendance at events and adoption days which may require some weekend and after-hours work
  • Review, develop and deliver a range of educational materials encompassing canine behaviour, behaviour modification, enrichment, training, socialisation, canine welfare, and responsible dog ownership
  • Completing pre-assessment and re-assessment paperwork while maintaining accurate records of animals and behaviour programmes in ASM
  • Undertake general office duties including but not limited to answering phone calls, emails, filing, record management in ASM and OzChase, booking pre assessments
  • Liaise with designated external Behaviourists and or Veterinary Behaviourist, and trainers for intake of new greyhounds into GAP program as required

Qualifications

About You

In order to be successful for this role you will need:

  • An understanding of canine behaviour
  • A qualification in Animal Behaviour is desirable
  • Experience in canine behaviour management including preparing, implementing, and adapting canine behaviour modification programs
  • Experience in shelter environments desirable
  • Experience in canine training using positive reinforcement techniques
  • Knowledge and understanding of greyhound racing industry is desirable
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated abilities in liaising with internal and external stakeholders
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in the execution of work
  • Current ‘C’ class driver’s license
