Job Description

Supervises and provides technical direction to local design staff. Organizes facility processes, clarifies project priorities, and oversees overall design output at the facility level.

  • Oversee design team output and act as the primary point of contact for design at the plant level.
  • Coordinates resources and sets daily priorities to meet objectives.
  • Ensure consistent and efficient internal processes and workflows specific to local manufacturing.
  • Represents plant design group while interfacing with all other plant departments.
  • Effectively communicates changes and priorities to the rest of the design staff.
  • Develop structural design solutions for paper-based packaging (folding cartons, corrugated, rigid boxes).
  • Manage design projects and maintain communications with sales, customer service, and manufacturing.
  • Participate in customer meetings (10%), to obtain production-related information and serve as an aid to production
  • Ensure new designs are created for optimum efficiency for production.
  • Create high-end, flawless packaging prototypes for customer presentations.
  • Create organized, clear, and consistent specifications, dielines, and BOMs.
  • Ensure all designs meet customer testing standards.
  • Follow the direction of the management team to ensure proper design protocols and procedures are followed.
  • Work collaboratively with design team members to identify and develop the best possible packaging solution.
  • Effectively communicate the reasoning behind design decisions.
  • Maintain clear organization of large ongoing projects involving a multitude of components and revisions.
  • Remain up to date on new packaging trends, materials, and technology.
  • Create 3D renderings including conceptual packaging design, exploded-view schematics, and detailed assembly instructions

Qualifications

Skills and Certifications

  • Minimum Bachelors degree in Engineering or related field. 
  • Minimum 5+ years with direct experience with Structural Packaging Design.
  • Uses judgment to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve day-to-day technical and operational problems.
  • Ability to consistently identify critical elements, variables, and alternatives to develop solutions.
  • Must be able to organize/prioritize existing resources and incorporate new information, as needed, to implement the most effective solutions.
  • Communicate clearly with those who need to know of decisions/actions/problems.
  • Excellent business acumen and collaborative skills when resolving problems.
  • Mentor junior-level team members in the use of tools and/or systems in the position.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to state messages clearly by using language that is easy for others to understand.
  • Ability to explain the program policies and procedures in language that is understood by others.
  • Ability to modify communication style both formal and informal to match the appropriate level of the audience targeted.
  • Write with the clarity and precision necessary for the work being performed.
  • Strong knowledge of packaging manufacturing equipment, processes, and capabilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of packaging prototyping equipment and processes.
  • Ability to multi-task while being able to prioritize projects and have efficient time management.
  • Advanced knowledge of ArtiosCAD is required.
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft products is preferred.
  • Solidworks / Rhino 3D experience is a plus.
  • Ability to quickly learn specialized software to complete work assignments.
  • Knowledge of packaging testing procedures- ISTA, TAPPI, ASTM.

 

Additional Information

RRD's current salary range for this role is $99,100 to $158,500 / year. The salary range may be adjusted based on the applicable geographic location of the hired employee, and the range may change in the future. At RRD, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions may vary based upon, but not limited to education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift and location. Depending on the role, in addition to base salary, the total compensation package may also include participation in a bonus, commission or incentive program.
