Job Description

An ideal system administrator will need, at minimum, a BS in a computer-related field such as computer science, computer engineer, or programming. Hands-on experience, particularly in IT systems or systems administration.

Candidates applying for the systems administrator position should underscore not only their knowledge, but their skills. Analytical skills and attention to detail are both vital skills, as system administrators may review network systems and analyze what’s working and what isn’t – and then suggest and implements solutions.

Leadership and organization skills are also helpful, as system administrators’ engineers are often responsible for collaborating with a range of employees.

Qualifications

1.   Server and Application Administration

This position will include primary responsibilities for building, maintaining, and automating application servers for a managed services network, with an emphasis on Linux based operating systems and open-source tools and applications.  

2. Networking 

This position will include significant network administration responsibilities so designing, implementing, and maintaining network performance, layers 2 thru layer 4, is a must. Understanding security best practices, VPNs and network monitoring platforms is also essential.

3. Compute and Network Virtualization

The ability to design and maintain servers and networks within multiple virtualization platforms is a must.  

4. Cloud 

Sysadmins should be aware of cloud architecture, the nuances of the major cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, and the security issues around storing data on the public cloud. 

5. Hardware Management

This position will have to set up physical server connections, racks, and manually configure devices.

6. SQL

The applicant will need to be comfortable configuring and integrating database servers and applications. 

7.  Problem-Solving and Administration

System admins have two main jobs: Solving problems, and anticipating problems before they happen.  This requires a critical mindset and concrete process to approaching issues. A five-step approach to tackling problems within a system: knowledge, observation, deduction, action, and testing.

Additional Information

Experience

  • 5+ years experience in the IT Industry
  • 5+ years experience as a Systems Administrator

Education/Vocational Training

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related field of study

Environmental/Physical Demands

  • Must have use of hands/fingers and capable of lifting within regulatory limits
  • Business travel required
