Job Description

RESPEC, an internationally recognized engineering consulting company, seeks a Geotechnical Engineer PE (Professional Engineer) to join our Anchorage, AK office. This is a full-time, onsite/office-based position.

The Geotechnical Engineer provides geotechnical engineering support for engineering design activities for infrastructure projects throughout Alaska and the Lower 48. Projects include buildings, utilities, roads, airports, mining infrastructure, and marine structures for a variety of private and public clients. Under the supervision of a senior geotechnical engineer, the geotechnical engineer plans and leads geotechnical field explorations, performs geotechnical analyses/calculations, reviews the work/calculations of geotechnical EITs, prepares geotechnical reports to support the design team on a wide variety of projects, and prepares scope and fee proposals. Work includes collaborating with a multi-discipline team of engineers and potentially helping with other disciplines such as civil, structural, and mining. This position will require some travel for field work to remote locations across Alaska.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop geotechnical exploration plans
  • Conduct geotechnical field investigations
  • Prepare design calculations
  • Prepare geotechnical reports
  • QC calculations and reports prepared by EITs
  • QC civil and structural plan sets for geotechnical aspects
  • Coordinate with civil and structural design teams during design
  • Assist with preparation of competitive proposals and developing project scopes and fee estimates

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, geotechnical, geological engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Alaska with 1-2 years of experience post-registration.
  • Good technical writing skills
  • The ability to plan and execute field explorations in remote locations across Alaska
  • Coursework in geotechnical engineering such as soil mechanics, rock mechanics, seismic engineering, foundation design, geophysics, etc.
  • Ability to work effectively independently as well as in a team environment
  • Ability/willingness to travel to remote locations in Alaska for field work
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and ability to use hand tools in the field such as shovels, hand probes, rock hammers, picks, pipe wrenches, etc.
  • A valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record; position requires operating a company or personal vehicle during work hours for business-related travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in geotechnical engineering, geologic engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • 4 years of work experience in geotechnical engineering including geotechnical field work, laboratory testing, creating borehole logs, slope stability analysis, and writing geotechnical reports
  • AutoCAD/Civil 3D experience
  • Experience in other related engineering disciplines such as environmental, civil, structural, hydrology/hydraulics, surveying, etc.
  • Engineering experience on Alaskan projects
  • Experience in preparing design drawings and design calculations for utility, site and roadway improvement projects
  • Experience with cold regions geotechnical engineering, permafrost engineering, and geotechnical thermal modeling
