Job Description

Summary: The First-Year Writing Program at Queens University of Charlotte seeks applicants for a visiting full-time, non-tenure track teaching position in Composition and Rhetoric to begin August 15, 2023. Although the search is open in regards to specialty area, teacher-scholars with interests in cultural rhetoric, technical writing, or digital rhetoric are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative First-Year Writing Program, housed in the English and Creative Writing Department, committed to inclusive and innovative undergraduate education. Teaching needs include composition and rhetoric courses for first-year students, with collaboration in learning community courses in Queens’ award-winning general education program. As a member of the First-Year Writing team, the selected candidate will also participate in program assessment, curriculum development, and service opportunities.

This position reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required

  • A master’s degree in Composition and Rhetoric, Writing Studies, or other closely related field (terminal degree required for appointment at rank of Assistant Professor)
  • Evidence of high-quality teaching effectiveness
  • Commitment to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion for students, faculty, staff, and members of the broader community

Preferred Qualifications and Expectations:

  • Experience using technology-supported pedagogies and active learning to engage a diverse student population.

Physical Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation) require ability to

  • Remain in a stationary position, most of the time.
  • Exchange accurate information with students, faculty and staff, frequently.
  • Read reports, create presentations, use a computer system, most of the time 
  • Communicate with students, faculty and staff, most of the time.

Work Conditions 

  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to meet requirements of the position, including teaching night or weekend classes. 
  • Must be able to work in office and classroom environment while having contact with faculty, students, staff, and parents on any given day.
