Job Description

Queens University of Charlotte seeks a proven leader in faculty development to serve as Director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence (CAFÉ).

This is a full-time, 12-month academic administrative position reporting directly to the Office of the Provost. Where experience and accomplishments warrant, the appointment may be offered with tenure at the rank of associate or full professor. The Director’s primary charge is to build upon the strong foundation at Queens for integrated faculty professional development.

The Director of the Center will provide leadership for faculty professional development in pedagogy, teaching and learning best practices, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. The Director will work closely with faculty, academic program chairs/directors, and deans to facilitate initiatives across campus that are designed to enhance the instructional mission of the university and support strategic institutional goals; therefore, demonstrated collaborative capability and strong interpersonal skills are a must.

This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

•    Work collaboratively across the university with faculty, program chairs/directors, and deans to build a community of practice around the scholarship of teaching and learning, pedagogical innovation, teaching and effectiveness, and research/creative work.

•    Develop, implement and assess initiatives that generate campus-wide interest and participation in faculty development in such key areas as teaching and learning, scholarship/creative work, instructional technologies, diversity and inclusion, and civic engagement.

•    Deepen the Center’s role as a hub for faculty-led sharing of best practices and engaged learning in a community of faculty scholars.

•    Design, implement and assess a comprehensive orientation and mentoring program for new faculty members and programs for professional renewal and continuing engagement for senior faculty and part time faculty, as appropriate.

•    Collaborate with the Hayworth Center for Online Learning to provide leadership for the integration of learning technologies into course pedagogy (including increased use of the University’s learning management system) and to enhance teaching effectiveness in hybrid and online learning modalities.

•    Define and implement assessment that measures the effectiveness of the Center’s programs in advancing, sharing and fostering excellence in all areas of faculty work.

•    Actively seek external grant support to help fund the Center’s activities.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience:
•    Candidates must have an earned doctorate or terminal degree in a discipline represented within the university and a record of success in undergraduate teaching, as well as appropriate scholarship/creative work.
•    At least three years of leadership experience in faculty development is required.
•    Current knowledge of theories and practices of effective teaching and learning, high-impact practices, and assessment.
•    Proven experience in working collaboratively with faculty, program chairs/directors, and deans to build a community of practice around the scholarship of teaching and learning, pedagogical innovation, teaching and effectiveness, and research/creative work.
•    Proven experience in developing, implement and assessing initiatives relating to faculty development in such key areas as teaching and learning, scholarship/creative work, instructional technologies, diversity and inclusion, and civic engagement.
•    Competence with online learning management systems, particularly in the area of enhancing teaching effectiveness.
•    Proven experience in designing, implementing and assessing comprehensive mentoring programs for new faculty members and programs for professional renewal and continuing engagement for senior faculty and part time faculty.
•    A successful track record of writing compelling grants that result in funding for the university or organization.

Work Conditions
•    Work in office and training center environments, contact with faculty, staff, students, providers and vendors.
•    Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times.
•    Work has occasional evening and weekend hours and may require occasional travel by air or private vehicle.
