Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Student Services

Job Description

Queens sponsors 31 sports programs for over 500 student-athletes and is a member of the South Atlantic Conference (SAC). The Assistant/Associate Athletic Director of Compliance is a senior-level administrative position within the Department of Athletics. This position reports directly to the Director of Athletics, with dotted-line reporting to the Director of Human Resources. This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Develop, monitor and oversee all aspects of NCAA compliance for all athletic programs.
• Responsible for acquiring, maintaining a detailed knowledge of NCAA, Conference and University Policies & Procedures, as well as implementing all policies and procedures of the department, university, Conference and NCAA.
• Manage Athletics department compliance and monitor compliance issues.
• Develop and implement programming to promote recruitment, success and retention of underrepresented students and staff.
• Direct, organize, and supervise all student-athlete academic initiatives.
• Ensure continuous development and communication of a comprehensive rules education program for student-athletes, coaches, staff, and boosters.
• Monitor and ensure equity between men’s and women’s athletics teams and serve as Athletics’ Title IX liaison.
• Evaluate and determine eligibility of incoming student-athletes and returning students’ eligibility within the compliance certification committee.
• Completion of annual student-athlete compliance forms within established timeframes.
• Monitor and communicate additions/deletions to rosters.
• Complete all NCAA mandatory reports within established timeframes.
• Responsible for all aspects of compliance in coordination with NCAA Membership Services including rules interpretation, scholarship allocations, scholarship equivalencies, playing/practicing seasons, official visits, tryouts and recruiting.
• Prepare and submit NCAA/SAC waivers requests in a timely manner.
• Investigate all possible violations of NCAA rules and report violations to the NCAA within established timeframes.
• Member of the Student Support Team.
• Represent the university at conference, regional, and national meetings

Nonessential Duties

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge & Skills Required
• Strong knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations and proven ability to interpret and apply same in varied situations.
• Strong leadership skills and experience in strategy development as well as proficient in setting and achieving challenging goals and objectives. Experience building and leading teams in various stages of development while serving as a positive role model to all.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven track record of interacting effectively with multiple and diverse constituencies (faculty, staff, students, parents, alums, public) in a positive manner.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience developing and presenting training and information to large and small groups.
• Proven success in developing and implementing programming that promotes recruitment, success and retention of underrepresented students and staff.
• Proven attention to detail, accuracy and timeliness. Excellent organization and follow-up and follow-through skills to ensure timely completion of tasks.
• First-hand experience with Title IX (in terms of both equity between men’s and women’s athletics teams and Dear Colleagues letters), Clery and VAWA cases.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, appropriately prioritize competing projects, and meet established deadlines.
• Ability to effectively work independently and as a strong contributor to Athletics’ leadership team.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel and ability to quickly learn and use new learning.
• Valid, unrestricted North Carolina driver’s license, or willingness/ability to obtain NC driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
• Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in experience and education. Master’s degree preferred.

Work Conditions
• Work in office environment involving contact with faculty, staff, students, parents, service providers and vendors.
• Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times.
• This position is expected to regularly represent the university at various athletic events and conferences, many of which are in the evening and/or weekends. Overnight travel is expected.
