Job Description

About the Radiotherapy Department

Our Radiotherapy Department serves a wide catchment area including Portsmouth, Southampton, West Sussex and the Isle of Wight. We provide high-quality, patient-centred care across scanning, planning and treatment, with an out-of-hours service delivered at weekends.

We are proud to be a motivated, enthusiastic and forward-thinking team, recognised as the Society of Radiographers South East Regional Team of the Year 2023.

We actively encourage applications from newly qualified therapeutic radiographers and third-year students, and we are passionate about supporting you as you begin your professional career.

Support for Newly Qualified Radiographers

All new recruits are enrolled onto a structured AHP/HCPC-aligned preceptorship programme, typically completed over 12 months, depending on your experience and point of entry.

The programme is designed to support your transition from student or newly qualified practitioner into a confident, competent Band 5 radiographer and includes:

  • Dedicated 1:1 meetings with an assigned preceptor
  • Structured education and training sessions
  • Reflective practice and supervised clinical activities
  • Patient case studies linked to development objectives

Following successful completion of preceptorship, you will have access to a self-directed development portfolio, supporting automatic progression to Band 6.

Equipment, Techniques and Innovation

You will gain experience in a well-equipped, modern department, including:

  • Four Varian TrueBeam 3.0 linear accelerators
  • Advanced IGRT imaging: online 4D CBCT, iCBCT and triggered imaging
  • 6DOF couches for Head & Neck, Upper GI and Lung SABR treatments
  • Abdominal compression immobilisation
  • A wide-bore Siemens GOSIM CT scanner
  • ARIA v15.6 oncology information system – fully paperless department
  • Raystation Treatment planning system

We also deliver Brachytherapy, Orthovoltage and on-treatment review services.

Our department currently delivers SABR for lung and oligometastatic disease, with prostate and spinal SABR recently introduced through our ambitious trials team and specialist radiographers.

Looking ahead, we have plans to introduce Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT) in 2026, supporting a move towards tattoo-less patient set-ups.

Career Development and Progression

PHU offers a clear and supported career pathway for therapeutic radiographers, from graduate level through to advanced practice, consultant and lead radiographer roles.

Working Pattern

  • Full-time hours worked over 4 or 5 days
  • Monday to Saturday service

If you are an enthusiastic graduate or soon-to-qualify therapeutic radiographer looking for excellent support, cutting-edge technology and genuine career progression, we would love to hear from you.
