Job Description

The post holder will be expected to maintain an eportfolio. They will be supported in this by regular meetings with their educational supervisor. They will be expected to supervise junior members of medical and clinical practitioner staff, support the nursing team and work with medical students. They will be supported by a team of PEM consultants, adult consultants, paediatric consultants and ENPs.

They will have exposure to a wide range of ED presentations including both major and minor trauma and illness. We treat patients up to their 18th birthday which provides the opportunity to manage adolescent mental health, recreational drug use and early pregnancy presentations also.

We operate a full shift rota incorporating middle grades, junior doctors and ACPs. Shifts are Early (0800-1730), Late (1300-2230), Twilight (1600-0200) and Night shifts (2200-0830).  Weekend working is 1 in 3. Handover time is included in all shifts. Night shifts may be move to Twilight shifts to match patient attendances in the paediatric ED. The rota is reviewed regularly and may be subject to change to balance workload and reflect current recruitment.

Within the rota will be pre-allocated development time to reflect the SPA commitments you will experience as a consultant. As such your time will reflect an 8:2 split i.e. 20% of your time will be educational development time to accommodate your non-clinical workload within the department and support further learning.

Middle grades will be expected to be involved in managing governance aspects of the department; including monitoring of results and keeping the electronic emergency department screen up to date. They will be expected to monitor their own results and results of cases they have reviewed with junior staff. As you progress through the placement you will be given the opportunity to run the shop floor overseeing the management and flow of all paediatric ED patients.

Trainees will participate in clinical governance activities, including audit or quality improvement projects. There are opportunities to develop local and regional guidelines in co-ordination with the guideline lead, or to participate in the data collection, presentation and discussion at our monthly joint paediatric M&M meeting.

Trainees will have the opportunity to take leadership management roles within the department, gaining experience with complaint management, education, and governance opportunities to further develop their portfolio.
