Job Description

Title: Design Engineering Manager

Reports to: VP of Engineering

Job Purpose: Serves as the direct manager of the Design Engineers, provides technical leadership within the Engineering department, and is responsible for all engineering design-related activities.

Location: Atlanta, GA

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Plan, implement, and manage customer support functions:

  • Manages, mentors and trains Design Engineers
  • Actively engages with Design Engineers and other Engineering team members at all other facilities
  • Manage all Design Engineering processes and standard work, with a focus on continuous process improvement
  • Along with the VP of Engineering, develops and maintains a cadence for on-site support at all other facilities
  • Through the Kata process, works to implement changes and Continuous Improvement projects for Manufacturing support
  • Creates engineering, working, tooling and fixture drawings as required by current projects
  • Reviews and provides feedback on part, tooling, fixture, and gauge designs via the Design Review process
  • Maintains Vault drawing database through periodic audits
  • Coordinates drawing changes with the appropriate departments
  • Participates in PPC meetings and updates PPC documents for Engineering
  • Evaluates customer data and contacts customer as necessary to determine critical dimensions and part function
  • Delegates development of engineering drawings from customer prints, samples and/or other customer-supplied information
  • Assists in PPAP creation as required for new designs/parts
  • Assists with performing DFMEAs and PFMEAs as required for new designs/parts
  • Creates and maintains ERP part data in support of manufacturing
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of Engineering standard work documents
  • Investigates, coordinates, and completes engineering change requests with the appropriate departments
  • Determines necessary data for engineering evaluations of quality and manufacturing issues
  • Maintains part approval history and leads part validation & verification process
  • Supports programming, operation, and maintenance of select automated machinery
  • Supports Tooling Design Engineer in designing and validating tooling, fixtures, and gauges in support of manufacturing
  • Assist VP of Engineering with building and executing the department’s long-term strategy and vision

  • Champion continuous improvement efforts through knowledge and awareness, training, and process improvement.
  • Maintains an organized, clean, and safe work area using 6S guidelines and participates in audits as required
  • Liaise with other functional groups and departments to support operational capabilities, changes, and improvements and to communicate timelines and deliverables to complete projects on time.
  • Ensure activities meet and integrate with organizational requirements for quality management, health and safety, legal stipulations, environmental policies and general duty of care
  • Execute all responsibilities according to lawful and ethical standards as established by company policies and procedures

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in design engineering, mechanical engineering or related field
  • Autodesk Inventor or similar 3-D modeling experience
  • Experience in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) with the ability to apply and communicate standards
