Teacher Vision

Pharos Academy Charter School is looking for a teacher who is an “uber” kid person. The ideal candidate absolutely loves to teach, train, and push students both academically as well as behaviorally. There is an understanding that messing up and failure is a natural and welcomed part of the learning process. In this teacher’s classroom, all students are treated with dignity at all times and students are taught non-academic skills like hard work, collaboration, kindness, and receiving feedback. 

In addition to being a kid person, the ideal candidate has a penchant for planning, preparation, using data, and being pushed to excellence. This teacher understands that what happens before students enter the classroom (intellectual preparation) drives what happens in the classroom and ultimately determines student achievement and success levels. 

PHACS Special Education Model

Pharos Academy follows an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) Model.  Our SPED teachers specialize in and support with only 1 core content area (ELA or Math).  Key responsibilities of a SPED teacher include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting 1 grade band (ie; K-2, 3-5, or 6-8) in their core content area.
  • Collaborating with lead teachers to co-plan lessons & create modified lesson plans based on IEP goals.
  • Developing, modifying, and/or updating IEPs in a timely manner.
  • Assessing student’s individual skills and educational needs
  • Monitoring student progress in order to ensure students are on track to meet IEP goals

Qualifications 

  1. Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in special education or math/ ELA related major.
  2. Certification in Special Education (Candidates working on degree are welcomed to apply)
  3. Experience working with school-aged children in an academic or youth development setting.
  4. Experienced teachers must show a proven track record of achievement in the classroom.

What We Offer You

  1. Competitive salary with yearly increase (based on performance driving student outcomes). Starting salary for new teachers begins at $80,000*. 
  2. $500/mo Rent Stipend offered for Bronx residents (offered for up to 3 years).
  3. 401k plan with employer matching of 4 percent.

  5. Classrooms fully stocked with 1:1 technology and all essential classroom supplies. 

*Entry salary range for this position is $80,000 - $90,000, with the potential to reach $110,000. Compensation is based on years of experience as well as performance metrics.

  5. Performance bonuses ($7500 – $15,000) for high performing teachers who meet/exceed instructional goals. 

Teacher Performance Outcomes

  1. At minimum, 90% of students with IEPs will meet their individualized performance goals as outlined on their IEPs. 
  2. At minimum, 75% of students with IEPs will reach proficiency on 50% of their NY state examinations within an academic school year. 
  3. At minimum, 90% of students with IEPs will show growth in mathematics and literacy as measured by the NWEA assessment. 
  4. Teacher will score proficient in classroom management and youth development as measured by student referral numbers, suspensions, and internal measurement tools.
