Job Description

The Formulation Scientist I is familiar with extraction and separation principles. Has the basic understanding of thermodynamic principles and wet chemistry techniques related to cannabis extracts. Helps establish and execute department Operations Plans based on the company goals. Has the ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one to another. The Formulation Scientist I is responsible for the daily preparation of broad spectrum raw extracts from cannabis biomass, the processing and purification of raw extracts through winterization, decarboxylation, distillation, and other purification techniques. Hands-on working style.
This position will be utilizing PLC driven systems to achieve high purity concentrates using different separation techniques; maintain a clean and organized work environment, and log all activities involving the extraction and refining processes. The Formulation Scientist I will safely and effectively produce high quality cannabis extracts and concentrates for use in medical cannabis oils, liquids, and solid dosages for ingestion, inhalation, and topical applications.

Duties and responsibilities or (Essential Functions)

  • Perform his/her duties in a safe manner and environment while adhering to all governmental regulations for this industry.

  • Operate and run the laboratory cannabis extraction equipment

  • Carry out all procedures in an efficient manner that also complies with FDA, OSHA regulations, PharmaCann SOP’s and all applicable procedures.

  • Cross-train on and work alongside the remainder of PharmaCann’s team within extract processing and packaging of medical cannabis product line.

  • Ensure compliance and accuracy involving all product tracking, product security, and product movement procedures. 

  • Follow appropriate control measures to prevent mixing of dissimilar production components while following Good Manufacturing Practices.

  • Perform in-process and post-process quality assurance testing and conduct visual inspections to ensure all product meets or exceeds PharmaCann’s specifications. Such quality assurance work shall include but not be limited to:

    • Recording and monitoring process conditions to ensure compliance to standard operating procedures

    • Proper weighting, data recording, and batch tracking throughout PharmaCann’s process

    • Continually strive to improve PharmaCann’s processes for improved patient safety, quality, and efficient manufacturing

  • Monitor and manage processing equipment supplies and inventory.

  • Perform daily Balance checks and calibrations, and confidently calculate Tare-Weight Gross-Weight

  • Support maintenance department in developing spare parts inventory and preventative maintenance schedules

  • Troubleshoot equipment issues with support from the maintenance department

  • Ability to analyze HPLC and GC data and chromatograms

  • Understand the principles of evaporation, condensation, separation, and crystallization

  • Possess working knowledge of vacuum systems

  • Confident in the operation of production scale distillation equipment

  • Familiar with the operation of PLC systems

  • Ability to utilize digital inventory control systems (i.e. ERP) 

  • Assist as required in the compounding, extraction and manufacturing/filling operations

  • Assist in the creation and authoring of related SOP’s

  • Train with R&D and Engineering teams to roll out new product lines

  • Communicate with QA/QC Lab to schedule sample submission for analytical testing

  • Experience with design of experiments, scientific documentation, and procedure creation

  • General knowledge of reactions, separations and mixing

  • Familiar with sterile technique and lab etiquette

Qualifications

 

  • Education/Experience: BS in Chemical Engineering

  • The ideal candidate will have one to two years of related laboratory experience with a focus on using various laboratory equipment including but not limited to vacuum systems, distillation systems, filtration systems, glass equipment, high pressure systems, understanding principals of operation for laboratory analytical equipment, and carry out general laboratory responsibilities. University work experience is acceptable. 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing, and challenging environment.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment

  • Willing to learn. 

Working conditions

  • Working on a production floor operating multiple pieces of equipment, potentially in different work areas spanning the processing section of the building. 

Physical requirements

  • Standing, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying glassware. 

  • Ability to be fitted for and wear protective gear.
