POSITION SUMMARY
The OSP Fielder provides support engineering services through the highly detailed collection of information from the job site. This position requires a working level of knowledge in all technical aspects of OSP (Outside Plant) fiber and copper networks. The successful candidate is responsible for identifying the existing field design and layout of the OSP telecommunications network, including aerial, buried, and underground fiber network design and layout, underground conduit, manhole/handhole, building entrance, and riser facilities.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
• Identifies, photographs and sketches detailed information of required facilities, including cables, poles, terminals, handholes, & other outside plant infrastructure.
• Capture accurate measurements of attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, & distances from existing/proposed OSP facilities to centerlines, property lines, and curb lines.
• Identify power and communication facilities and ownership on utility poles.
• Record bonding, grounding, guying, and anchor information.
• Deliver detailed field notes & photographs to the engineering team.
• Identification of any potential issues with proposed routes.
• Understanding of OSP construction techniques.
• Ability to read and understand maps, conduit records, and layout drawings.
• Be able to utilize tools, such as measuring wheels effectively, height sticks, pull finders, MH/HH hooks, & laser rangefinder.
• The capability of managing own workload and prioritizing multiple field engineering assignments
• Negotiate and execute building access agreements
QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS
• 2+ years of experience in fiber-optic/telecommunications/telecom construction industry
• Willing to Travel 75%-100% of the time
• Knowledge of outside plant activities (Fiber Cable Design, Pole Line Construction, Conduit System design)
• Ability to read and understand as build prints, and be able to identify conflicts with existing outside plant facilities, select routing of lines and equipment required for projects
• Familiar with GIS (Geographic Information Systems), ESRI, and Shapefile functionality
• Understanding of National Electric Safety Code and knowledge of OSP construction and engineering techniques
• Experienced in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Earth.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD (a plus)
• Experienced utilising an iPad and/or similar tablet for field data collection (experience with ARC-GIS Collector app is a plus
• High School Diploma and or equivalent work experience
• Ability to work 90% of the time outdoors
• Must have a valid driver’s licence, reliable transportation with acceptable driving record, and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
• Good organisational, written, and verbal communication skills
