Job Description

ROLE SUMMARY

The Node.js Backend Engineer builds and maintains backend services and APIs powering PayZeep's payment platform using Node.js. The Node.js Backend Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining scalable backend services, APIs, and microservices that power PayZeep digital financial products.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, build and maintain backend services and APIs using Node.js.
  • Write clean, tested, well-documented, maintainable code.
  • Integrate with core banking, switching and third-party payment systems.
  • Participate in code review, architecture discussions and sprint planning.
  • Diagnose and resolve production incidents affecting backend services.
  • Implement secure coding practices for payment-processing systems.
  • Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability across production environments.
  • Build services that support wallet management, transfers, collections, settlements, and reconciliation processes.
  • Ensure transaction integrity and proper audit trails across financial operations.
  • Implement secure coding standards and best practices in line with OWASP guidelines.
  • Participate in vulnerability assessments, code reviews, and remediation initiatives.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement preventive measures for recurring issues.
  • Collaborate with DevOps teams to improve system resilience and uptime.
  • Implement logging, observability, and performance monitoring solutions.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, QA Engineers, and Frontend Developers.
  • Conduct peer code reviews and mentor junior engineers where applicable.

Qualifications

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (required).

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Total Relevant Experience: 3-5 years experience

Fintech / Financial Services Experience: 3+ years building backend systems in fintech or a regulated environment preferred

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Strong Node.js/TypeScript and RESTful API development skills
  • Experience with relational/NoSQL databases and message queues
  • Understanding of secure coding practices (OWASP)
  • Familiarity with containerization and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with cloud-native application development.
  • Advanced understanding of RESTful API design and development.
  • Experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Strong understanding of secure coding practices.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and code quality.

REGULATORY CONSIDERATIONS (NIGERIA)

  • Implement backend controls aligned with PCI-DSS secure-development requirements.
  • Ensure data handling in backend services complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023.
