Job Description

This position is responsible for moderate and complex tasks and projects related to drilling operations and rig design.

Essential functions

• Creates conceptual, preliminary, and detailed designs with hand sketches, AutoCAD drawings, or 3D computer models.

• Plans and schedules moderate complex tasks and portions of projects to ensure delivery and product quality.

• Serves as project engineer on moderate and/or complex projects.

• Supervises engineering work performed by contractors or other less experienced engineering personnel.

• Review supplier designs against licensor requirements, regulatory code requirements, design specifications, and customer requirements.

• Coordinate with suppliers throughout the fabrication phase of the project.

• Responsible for the drawing review and engineering release.

• Review technical documentation, such as procedures, project plans, and system specifications, prior to distribution to end-users and ensure their subject area is accurately represented.

• Supports or leads project initiation, project planning, execution of project work, monitoring and controlling, and project closeout.

• Reviews and keeps track of contract requirements for new construction and modifications.

• Supports internal customers on the drilling operation maintenance and system continuous improvement.

• Remain abreast of current technological progress to ensure the Company’s products remain marketable and competitive.

• Abide by Company policies and procedures.

• Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Necessary qualifications, skills and abilities

• A Bachelor’s degree in Structural/Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering is required.

• A PE or EIT is preferred.

• Should have at least 10 years of work experience in drilling rig design, construction or another similar drilling-related field.

• Must be proficient in AutoCAD, Inventor or other 3D CAD design software.

• Must have knowledge of codes and standards in AISC, ASME, ASTM, ABS, API, AWS, and other related industries.

• Must be a detail oriented, self-starter and able to work with little supervision while maintaining goals/tasks.

• Must have good PC skills to include all MS Office products.

• Must have strong written and verbal technical communication skills including writing reports, emails, and presentations at various internal and external organizational levels (peers, clients, and vendors). The individual should have proficient structural/mechanical engineering knowledge related to the following items:

• Relevant codes and standards including but not limited to AISC Steel Construction Manual, 9th Edition, AWS D1.1, ASCE 7-10 and API-4F.

• Analysis and design of steel structures and their components including determinate and indeterminate trusses, beams and frames; deflection based criteria.

• Local and global modes of failure for structural members and systems

• Experience designing structural systems including decks, substructures, masts/derricks and/or equipment foundations based on AISC 9th Edition and the latest API specifications, utilizing structural analysis software such as SAFI or equivalent.

• Knowledge of the various structural material grades utilized in arctic and temperate climates including fasteners.

• Knowledge of the various welding techniques, procedures and materials and how they relate to the fabrication of drilling structures.

• Knowledge of structural/mechanical designs related to drilling rigs and how various designs interface with other disciplines.

• Knowledge of equipment and functionality regarding utility systems such as compressed air, water, fire water, steam & condensate, hydraulic power, diesel, and natural gas.
