Job Description
The Assistant Cold Stack Operator is multi-skilled employee whose main duties are to work within and assist the Cold Stack crew in the proper way to perform the duties and assigned tasks within the planned Cold Stack phase. This position reports directly to the Rig Superintendent and is responsible for assisting in organizing, planning and executing all operations pertaining to the Cold Stack period which include but are not limited to: operating various Drilling equipment components (i.e. Mud pumps, fluid control stations (such as: DDAS, Procon, etc.) for equipment maintenance, preservation activities and/or equipment upgrades, confined space entry, non-standard rigging and slinging, work being performed overhead, derrick inspections and assisting Well Work department with well bled backs through drilling rig well control equipment as required. It is the Assistant Cold Stack Operator responsibility to ensure that the work is performed safely, efficiently and according to procedure.
Essential functions
- Provide visible leadership with a Total Ownership attitude. Owns safety standards.
- Work within the Cold Stack crew and ensure the safety of crew as well as ensuring efficient operations during tour of duty.
- Enforce, clarify, and follow Company policies, standards, and procedures.
- Follow the client’s daily cold stack plans.
- Promote operational excellence through procedural discipline.
- Ensure crews achieve Company and client competency standards.
- Train and work with crew members on standard operating procedures to include, but not limited to, proper care and maintenance of the rig and rig equipment, including lubrication and preservation of equipment and general housekeeping.
- Delegate work effectively with a clear definition of requirements and expectations.
- Responsible for morale and order within crew.
- Ensure Authorized to Operate (ATO) and Approved Competent Operator (ACO) are applied and followed.
- Ensure timely completion of accurate reports required by Company and client (including but not limited to daily, weekly and bi-weekly equipment preservation checklists, hand-over notes, etc.).
- Familiar with Cyber Chair-based drilling equipment (joy stick) for the purpose of carrying out equipment maintenance, equipment removal, or equipment preservation requirements.
- Maintain and adjust machinery in order to ensure proper performance.
- If Drawworks is in operation, ensure floor and crown savers are function-tested and that testing results are recorded tourly.
- Can ensure proper alignment of choke manifold and competent to operate Remote Choke if required to assist Well Work department with any well bleed back operations or well circulating activities which are required to be processed through the drilling rigs well control equipment.
- Carry out daily, weekly and bi-weekly equipment preservation checks and document.
- Ensure rig equipment and deck areas are secure prior to rig skidding activities.
- Assist with rig skidding operations as required throughout Cold Stack phase.
- Install and remove rigging during crane activities, including slings, shackles and spreader beams.
- Work with the platform deck crane activities as instructed by the Crane Operator.
- Operate pipe deck gantry cranes as needed during Cold Stack phase.
- Off load and loads supply boats of any equipment necessary for platform operations.
- Inspect and check all rig floor safety belts to ensure they are always in good working condition.
- Perform mud pump repairs, maintenance and preservation, including disassemble, reassemble or oil change and filters.
- Mixes chemicals and lines up mixing pump manifold as required for Well Work department.
- Perform housekeeping and cleanliness around the rig floor working area.
- Perform scrubbing and cleaning of rig equipment and drilling packages as required with rig wash.
- Perform chipping and painting on drilling packages and equipment as required
- Perform safe operation of the rig floor hydraulic winches and man rider winch
- Performs isolations and LOTO procedures pertaining to any circulating, rotating or hoisting equipment.
- Performs installation of equipment overhead in the derrick, including third parties as required.
- Manages and carries out work at mud tanks, bulk tanks and structural tanks for confined space entry, internal tank cleaning, maintenance and preservation.
- Lines up valves, hoses, hard piping for fluid transfer to and from support vessels
- Cleans the mast and substructure with a high-pressure steam cleaning unit
- Comply with platform emergency response plan or station bills during emergencies and/or drills.
- If required, fill active role in Platform’s emergency response team.

Necessary qualifications, skills and abilities

- Able to identify and understand functionality and safety operate various rig equipment components.
- Knowledgeable and proficient in basic rigger’s role to ensure safe lifting operations are performed.
- Knowledgeable of mechanical systems and be skilled at working with hand and power tools.
- Knowledgeable of and capable of operating forklifts, gantry cranes, tubular shuttles, etc.
- Can demonstrate knowledge and be able to function the following equipment:
- Choke & Kill manifolds and associated Auto Chokes
- Automated pipe handling equipment
- Cyber base drilling control and safety systems
- Anti-collision surface equipment systems
- Can demonstrate knowledge and execution of the following operations:
- Cold Stack equipment preservation operations
- Well control operations
- Dropped objects prevention
- Line of fire, zone of exclusion and safe zone operations
- Must have good verbal communication skills and be able to effectively communicate in English with staff, management, customers and vendors.
- Must possess sound reasoning skills, common sense and the ability to follow directions.
- Must possess basic mathematical skills (equivalent to a high school education) and be proficient in rig math.
- Education, experience, and certifications:
- High School diploma is required
- Must be able to obtain appropriate Offshore certifications
- Basic Survival Training (BST)

- Should have at least 4 years of experience working with drilling equipment, including but not limited to Cyber base drilling control and safety systems, Top drive’s, Drawworks, and well control equipment for the purpose or carrying out equipment maintenance, preservation or upgrades.

- The employee will be required to meet all standards required for safe operations, including but not limited to the standards set forth in the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers Atlantic Canada Medical Assessment for Fitness to Work Offshore as well as any other standards set forth by regulatory bodies having jurisdiction over the operations.
- The employee must stay mentally alert for entire regular shift and must have the ability of simultaneously rapid mental coordination.
- This position will be located offshore Newfoundland and Labrador on the Hibernia platform and is subject to extreme temperatures and environments.
- Travel to and from the work location may require extended layovers in unfamiliar locations by helicopter or boat.
- This position will be required on an ad hoc basis to execute defined scopes of work or to meet increasing workloads.
