Job Description

To set up and operate the CNC lathe, NC lathe, manual lathe, milling machine, boring machine and grinders to machine metallic and non-metallic work pieces.

KEY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CONTACTS

  • Recognize their responsibility for their own personal safety.
  • Perform their job duties in a safe manner, observing established work procedures and safety regulations.

  • Recognize occupational hazards, report them to the appropriate supervisor, and initiate measures to control them; report unsafe work conditions or equipment immediately.
  • Attend all required safety training and periodic safety meetings.
  • Report all work-related accidents and near-miss incidents immediately.
  • Actively participate in the Health, Safety, and Environmental program including taking part in safety meeting discussions and training.
  • Contribute suggestions and recommendations for the improvement of the safety, health, and environmental program.
  • Have regard for and use the PPE and equipment provided to him/her.   Become well informed on the proper use and care of any personal protective equipment provided.
  • Participate in JSA analysis, to ensure jobs are conducted in a safe manner.
  • Makes safety observations of each employee within his/her area of responsibility on a regular basis and when a new employee is assigned to their supervision.
  • Oversees the pre-job safety meeting program in the field and shop.   Ensures employee attendance and participation in this program.
  • Periodically inspects tools and equipment and removes from service any found to be defective.
  • Issues and requires his/her employees to wear proper safety equipment and protective clothing required for the job.
  • Promptly investigates all accidents and near-miss incidents within his/her area of responsibility to determine accident causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Responsible for safety and housekeeping conditions in his/her area and conducts regular audits within his/her responsibility to determine the accident cause and implement corrective actions.
  • Instructs newly hired or transferred employees on recommended safe job procedures before assigning work.
  • Instructs employees assigned to the emergency organization in the performance of their duties and ensures that they are trained to use portable fire extinguishing equipment.
  • Responsible for the enforcement of all safety rules and regulations issued by management

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge:  Good knowledge of machine shop equipment and lathing operations. Ability to read and program numerical control systems.

Good knowledge of premium thread connection theory and application. Good knowledge in the use and care required for measuring equipment for threading measurements.

Skills: Good interpersonal skills – Team player, Proactive, Ability to effectively communicate written and orally with peers and supervisors, Good safety habits.

Personality: Resilient, Ability to work in teams, Flexible to accommodate operational requirements, Self-motivated, Willingness to learn.

MINIMUM LEVEL OF EDUCATION

The Machinist – Level 2 should have passes in three Ordinary Level GCSE Grade or Equivalent subject. Certification in general Machine Shop operations.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

2 – 4 years working with machining lathes.

At least 2000 contact hours as a Machinist – Level 1 in the ITS Machine Shop Department.
