Palo Alto Networks is looking for a Director of Intellectual Property that will provide Palo Alto Networks the full range of IP support to protect Palo Alto’s innovations and mitigate litigation risks. This person will be working with cross-functional teams to implement process improvements in a fast-paced environment.

Manage intellectual property litigation and disputes, including defining and executing strategy, reviewing all briefing and filings, preparing for depositions and working with witnesses, and determining dispute resolution approaches.
Develop the infrastructure and strategies to prevent IP disputes from arising or minimize risks and impact for if/when they arise.
Counsel management, product, and legal teams on IP matters involving patents, trade secrets, trademarks, copyrights, open source, and licensing.
Help drive the development, implementation, and management of IP strategies and programs (and related policies and procedures) to protect Palo Alto Networks innovations, achieve business objectives, mitigate risk, and reduce costs/inefficiencies.
Provide support and training to management, product, and legal teams on various IP subject matters.
Participate in invention disclosure review meetings with relevant teams, help identify inventions and develop invention disclosures, and instruct inventors on legal requirements for patentable inventions.
Participate in patent committee meetings for selecting new patent filings and facilitating portfolio management.
Help review patent applications to ensure the highest quality deliverables from both an offensive and defensive strategy perspective.
Effectively communicate with relevant teams to enable critical decisions on IP matters.
Assist in managing relationships with outside counsel and help reduce outside counsel costs while still achieving business objectives.
Provide support on a broad range of IP related agreements, including non-disclosure agreements, joint development agreements, and licensing (inbound and outbound) agreements.
Counsel management, product, and legal teams on open source licensing, usage, compliance, and risk mitigation.
J.D. from a highly respected law school and admission to a state bar required
10+ years experience as experience as intellectual property attorney with reputable, highly rated law firms and/or technology companies
In-house experience in overseeing/leading an IP team(s) preferred
Significant experience in managing patent litigation and IP dispute matters, including managing outside counsel work product and litigation budgets
Knowledgeable in IP portfolio development and strategy, open source legal compliance and trade secret protection
Comprehensive understanding of intellectual property case law, rules and regulations
Exceptional interpersonal skills and collaborative work style
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
Effective oral and written communication skills; fits message to audience
Self-directed, highly motivated
Excellent relationship building, influencing and negotiating abilities
