Job Description

A DAB Embedded systems engineer (automotive) is a specialised software engineer responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining the firmware that runs on automotive host computers (e.g. TCU, infotainment unit). Automotive TCU devices are part of vehicles with sensors, software, and other technologies that enable them to connect to the internet, gather and exchange data, and perform various tasks. Firmware is the low-level software that operates directly on the hardware of these devices, controlling their functionality and communication.

DAB's vision of converting connected cars into EoT agents is realised by a DAB firmware on the edge. This key role helps in realizing that vision by building software that makes it possible to remote-enable (via FOTA) or factory-enable cars through downloadable software.

Here's an overview of the key responsibilities, skills, and qualifications typically associated with a DAB-enabled automotive TCU Firmware Developer profile:

Responsibilities:

  1. Firmware Development: Design, develop, and optimize TCU firmware for DAB-enabled devices, focusing on efficient and reliable operation while considering resource constraints (memory, processing power, data usage, etc.).
  2. Communication Protocols: Implement communication protocols such as MQTT, CoAP, HTTP, CANBUS, and others to enable data exchange between DAB-enabled TCU, backend server, and in-car communication systems.
  3. Device Integration: Integrate various sensors, actuators, and communication modules into the firmware to enable data collection, analysis, and remote control.
  4. Security: Implement security measures to protect devices and data, including encryption, authentication, and secure boot mechanisms.
  5. Power Management: Optimize firmware for efficient power consumption to extend the battery life of battery-operated DAB-enabled TCU devices.
  6. Testing and Debugging: Conduct thorough testing and debugging of firmware to identify and resolve issues related to functionality, performance, and stability.
  7. Collaboration: Work closely with hardware engineers, software developers, and other cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of firmware with hardware and software components.
  8. Documentation: Create documentation for the firmware development process, including design specifications, coding guidelines, and user manuals.

Qualifications

Skills

  1. Programming Languages: Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in embedded systems development, such as C, C++, Shell, and sometimes Python.
  2. Embedded Systems: Strong understanding of embedded systems concepts, including memory management, real-time operating systems, and hardware-software interaction.
  3. Communication Protocols: Familiarity with various communication protocols, such as MQTT, CoAP, Bluetooth, Zigbee, LoRa, CANBUS, AT commands, and Wi-Fi.
  4. Version Control: Experience with version control systems like Git to manage and track changes in firmware codebase.
  5. Debugging Tools: Proficiency in using tools like JTAG debuggers, GDB, and other such tools.
  6. Security Principles: Knowledge of security principles and practices related to IoT, including secure coding, authentication, encryption, and secure boot.
  7. RTOS (Real-Time Operating Systems): Experience working with RTOS platforms to manage tasks, scheduling, and resource allocation in real-time embedded systems.
  8. Hardware Understanding: A good understanding of car TCU electronics and hardware components is a must.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Experience in software development for automotive host computers such as TCUs, infotainment systems, etc. (must have)
  • Experience in car architecture (CANBUS protocol, interworking between TCU and Car OEM cloud servers, infotainment, etc.)
  • Experience in software development on aftermarket automotive devices such as OBDs, T-boxes, etc., (good to have)
  • A bachelor's or master's degree or certifications in computer science, electronic engineering, or a related field. (must have)
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies (good to have).
