Job Description
A Day in the Life:
Under the direction of the Operations Manager and the Seed Orchard Technician (SOT), the SOT Assistant is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day activities in the orchards in order to maximize the production of high-quality seed from the orchard trees while upholding PRT’s safety and environmental practices and polices. The position is non-continuous (seasonal). During the off season, the SOT Assistant will be offered to assist and take part in other nursery work which may include supervisor, quality assurance or machine operator duties. No shift work required. Candidates should have a desire and keenness to learn about the seed orchard activities, keep accurate records, work independently and efficiently. Candidates may be interviewed and tested to assess their abilities and qualifications for this position.
Key Accountabilities of the Seed Orchard Technician Assistant are:
- Collect data on orchard inventories and maps
- Collect scion material and graft onto root stock
- Conduct pollen and cone inventories
- Fertilize, prune and irrigate orchard trees
- Assess seed embryo development
- Assist in winterizing irrigation system
- Operate and maintain orchard equipment
- Use of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for pest monitoring
- Support innovation and continuous improvement
- Promote collaboration and teamwork at all levels
- Set targets (i.e., production, timelines) and evaluate achievement
About the team:
The Seed Orchard Technician Assistant will be part of a team reporting to the Seed Orchard Technician, Lead by the Operations Manager. This position is in the breathtaking Okanagan Valley, Armstrong, BC. This beautiful location offers activities and magnificent scenery all year long!
Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications & Skills:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Valid Driver’s License
- Intermediate level skills with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Work, Outlook)
- Ability to work independently
- Strong communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills
- Great organizational and record keeping skills
Preferred Qualifications& Skills:
- Pesticide Applicator Certificate
- Certificate or training in horticulture, seed orchards or forestry
- Minimum 2-year experience in growing or seed orchard role
