Job Description

Our legal team works cross-functionally to help achieve Optimizely’s ambitious mission of enabling
all teams to work together effortlessly. We’re a tight-knit, collaborative group responsible for
supporting all teams throughout the organization to ensure they have the resources they need to be
successful while likewise protecting Optimizely’s core values and interests. We run ideas past each
other, we problem-solve together, we partner with other groups to navigate them through challenging
issues, and we’re growing our team.

We’re looking for a Product, Privacy, and Commercial Counsel who has prior experience
counseling sales, marketing, and product teams on privacy, consumer protection, and intellectual
property matters and who is skilled at negotiating SaaS (and a variety of other) agreements. Above
all, you will bring a business-oriented, pragmatic mindset to solving problems while delivering legal
advice without the legalese.

What You’ll Be Doing:


  • Analyzing product features both to ensure compliance with global privacy laws and regulations, consumer protection laws, and other legal requirements and to safeguard Optimizely’s intellectual property rights
  • Supporting all areas of the business by drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements
  • Collaborate across the organization on the development of compliance-focused products, processes and services
  • Review product specs and provide daily support to PMs and Engineer
  • Supporting and continuing to build out Optimizely’s compliance initiatives, specifically those related to privacy
  • Work closely with the Security and Corp Communications team in the event of a data incident
  • Continue Privacy by Design efforts to create compliance efficiencies within the product
  • Working closely with our global sales team to negotiate enterprise level SaaS agreements
  • Supporting all areas of the business by drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements
  • Wearing multiple hats depending on the day by providing general legal advice and counsel to our global teams


  • 4+ years of law firm and/or in-house legal work experience
  • JD from a US law school and member of the California Bar
  • Strong knowledge of and experience applying U.S. and European privacy and consumer protection laws
  • Excellent legal and business judgment with the ability both to assess risks quickly and to communicate those risks to business partners in non-legal speak
  • Track record of taking initiative, having the ability to work independently, handle multiple projects with competing deadlines, and be comfortable thriving in ambiguity
  • Great communicator that is comfortable liaising with multiple teams to solve problems
  • A sense of humor and the ability to work well with a tight-knit, fast growing team
