Job Description

We’re in the early stages of building our first engineering team outside of San Francisco and are looking for a strong engineering leader for our Austin teams. We’ve started laying the foundation with a few great engineers who are already on board, but you’ll take it from there and shape the engineering team through your vision, hiring and all-around leadership. Be the builder for our organization in Austin. We are well on our way to something special at Optimizely with the growth and success of our Austin Engineering team being key to our next phase of growth.

The Optimizely Austin Engineering team has its roots in our acquisition of Experiment Engine in 2017. Now, its charter has expanded to include our Enterprise Platform Services and key parts of our event ingestion pipeline.

While your direct reports will be within the engineering organization, you will provide leadership for all functions in our growing Austin Office, helping drive the overall success of the office. Within engineering, your primary responsibility is to the people on your team - not only hiring and building it, but also ensuring that the members are growing as engineers, doing valuable work and thriving at Optimizely. You enjoy being of service to your team and to the larger engineering organization, and your leadership is grounded in empathy and compassion. Successful leaders value the success and growth of their team over anything else.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide overall leadership for our Austin Office.

  • You will build our engineering identity, culture and team in Austin through recruiting and engagement in the local software community (conferences, meetups, etc).

  • You will lead our engineering team (frontend & application backend) in Austin and help the members of your team grow both technically and professionally

  • Lead, inspire, and influence to make sure your team is successful

  • Strong leadership presence resulting in the ability to forge cross-functional partnerships and drive strong organization results

  • Communicate, communicate, communicate. Leaders of remote team must be examples of effective communication to their teams.

  • Collaborate with the other managers to ensure we are building products that provide a consistent and powerful experience across both our web and developer-focused products

  • Establish great rapport with other development teams, Product Managers, Sales and Customer Success to maintain high levels of visibility, efficiency, and collaboration

  • You will have visibility, influence and impact across all of Optimizely’s engineering teams and product areas

  • You will manage teams working with: Javascript, Python, and Java

You will be successful in this role if:

  • You are able to thrive and lead multiple cross-functional projects at once

  • You are naturally inclined to take initiative and help make an impact on the larger Product Development organization

  • You have solid organizational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and keep projects on schedule

  • You have a strong technical background that allows you to advocate for and support your engineers
