Job Description
As a DevOps Engineer, you’ll help make life easier for the engineers building OUA’s digital products.
Your primary customers are our product engineering teams. You’ll work closely with them to understand how they build, test, deploy and support software, identify friction, and optimise those activities through automation, self-service capabilities and practical guidance.
This is a hands-on engineering role combining software development and cloud operations. You’ll build services and developer tooling in TypeScript, maintain AWS infrastructure and help shape how we continuously improve the way software gets from an idea into production.
You’ll also have the opportunity to explore how AI-assisted development and coding agents can improve engineering workflows and automate more of the software delivery process.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll take ownership of meaningful pieces of work from understanding the problem through to delivery and ongoing support. This includes:
Building and maintaining platform services, APIs, developer tooling and automation
Working alongside product engineers to understand their needs, remove delivery bottlenecks and make services easier to build and operate
Develop and maintain AWS infrastructure through code, with security, reliability, scalability and cost in mind
Improving the platforms and workflows that support continuous integration, testing, deployment and observability
Troubleshooting across application, infrastructure and networking layers and contributing to incident response
Embedding security into everyday engineering, including access controls, networking, secrets management and dependency maintenance
Turning repetitive operational work and recurring support needs into reusable tools, documentation and self-service capabilities
Exploring new AWS capabilities, AI tools and coding agents and applying them where they create meaningful improvements
Understanding the cost of our cloud environment and helping identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary spend without compromising reliability or security
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who enjoys building software and helping other engineers do their best work. You’ll thrive in this role if you bring:
Practical software engineering experience – you’ve built, tested, deployed and maintained software services and understand the day-to-day experience of a product engineer
A DevOps mindset – you value shared ownership, automation, fast feedback and continuous improvement, and you’re comfortable supporting what you build in production
Hands-on AWS experience – you understand core AWS compute, storage, networking, identity and observability services and have experience managing infrastructure through code
Strong networking fundamentals – you’re comfortable with concepts such as TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, TLS, routing, subnets, firewalls and load balancing
A security mindset – you think about how systems might fail or be misused and make security part of everyday engineering decisions
Ownership and initiative – you can take an unclear problem, turn it into practical next steps and follow it through to completion
Curiosity and a drive to learn – you enjoy experimenting with new technologies and adapting your approach as you learn
An interest in AI and coding agents – you’re actively curious about how AI-assisted development can improve the way software is built and operated
A passion for platform enablement – you enjoy helping other engineers achieve more and building solutions they can understand and use independently
OUA uses TypeScript and the broader JavaScript ecosystem for software engineering. You don’t need to have spent your whole career working in TypeScript, but you should be confident building software in a modern programming language and willing to become productive in TypeScript.
