Job Description

Olsson's Utility Environmental Sciences team is where innovation meets sustainability in the energy sector. Our diverse team, comprising experts in various environmental sciences, focuses on providing environmentally sound and economically viable solutions. We excel in navigating complex regulatory landscapes and ensuring compliance with major environmental acts and policies. Our work spans environmental engineering, planning, and permitting, delivering win-win solutions for clients, communities, and the environment.

As a Scientist on our Environmental Sciences team, you will leverage geographic information system (GIS) software to support environmental projects through design work, spatial analysis, data collection, and modeling. This role involves assisting scientists and planners by collecting, managing, and analyzing spatial environmental data and contributing to the development of sustainable and impactful environmental solutions.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide data collection and research for specific phases of scientific projects using fundamental knowledge, standard techniques, and established methods.
  • Perform GIS-based spatial analysis, mapping, and modeling to support environmental assessments and decision-making.
  • Create and manage geospatial data, such as feature classes, shapefiles, raster datasets, and geodatabases.
  • Develop and maintain GIS databases, ensuring data accuracy and accessibility for project teams.
  • Assist with the preparation of technical reports, maps, and visualizations to communicate project findings and recommendations.
  • Coordinate with experienced scientists on non-routine techniques and procedures, ensuring project goals are met effectively.
  • Leverage ArcGIS Online’s (AGOL) suite of apps to create client-facing web maps, dashboards, and databases to enhance Olsson-client interactions.
  • May travel and work in various terrains and weather conditions at project sites in different stages of development.

We have one current opening and will consider candidates interested in being located out of our Omaha, NE; Lincoln, NE; Des Moines, IA; or Overland Park, KS office locations working a hybrid schedule.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a scientific discipline, geography, or a related field, with a focus on geospatial technologies.
  • A minimum of four year of professional or academic experience in GIS.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, applying geospatial methods and technologies to address various project needs and challenges.
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn new skills and technologies, keeping up with the latest developments and trends in the GIS field.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS Online and its applications, such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Hub.
  • Experience with the ESRI suite of geospatial products; Proficiency with remote sensing techniques, scripting languages, such as Python, R, SQL, and ModelBuilder a plus.
