Job Description

As an Associate Engineer on the Rail Water Resources team, you will provide various engineering duties related to hydrologic/hydraulic analysis for Class I Railroad projects.  You will assist with developing the basic plan production, prepare technical reports, review CAD drawings, and obtain local, state, and federal permits for water resources related projects. This role contributes to generating ideas and creating designs that provide purposeful, high-quality solutions to successfully solve engineering and design needs. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides small scale design elements for engineering projects using fundamental knowledge, standard techniques, and established methods for small to mid-sized projects.
  • Performs basic plan production and receives instructions for necessary tasks.
  • Develops and applies knowledge and experience working within design and modeling software.
  • Assists with preparation of project documentation and schedules and performs design calculations within a limited scope.
  • Coordinates with experienced engineers and designers on non-routine techniques and procedures.
  • Gathers research, recommends solutions, and creates drafts of technical reports using prescribed methods.
  • Mentors student interns by providing opportunities for developing basic technical skills and knowledge.
  • Gains experience with creating and maintaining project and client information within the firm’s project management system.
  • May supervise student staff.

Travel is required to job sites for field reconnaissance in all types of terrain and weather conditions.

  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to contribute and work well on a team
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
  • Minimum of 1 year related engineering experience
  • Must possess Engineer Intern certificate (EI)
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, GIS, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS or other related hydrologic and hydraulic software is preferred
  • Solid interpersonal, problem-solving, communication (verbal and written) and decision-making skills
  • Has advanced mathematical and analytical abilities
  • Has a valid driver’s license and a good driving history
  • Has a willingness to work a flexible schedule
